About the Water Type

Water is one of the 18 Pokemon types introduced in Generation 1. Water is the most common type in Pokemon, with more Water-type Pokemon than any other type. Water moves are super effective against Fire, Ground, and Rock types. Defensively, Water is excellent with only two weaknesses (Electric and Grass) and 4 useful resistances including Fire and Ice. Water-types shine in Rain weather, which boosts their Water moves by 50% and halves Fire damage.

Notable Water-type Pokemon

Gyarados

The Water/Flying terror with Intimidate and Moxie. Gyarados sets up with Dragon Dance to boost Speed and Attack, then sweeps with Waterfall and Ice Fang. Its Mega form gains Mold Breaker, ignoring opposing Abilities.

Kyogre

The primal embodiment of the sea with Drizzle summoning permanent rain. Primal Kyogre's base 150 Special Attack with a 50% rain boost on Water moves makes Origin Pulse devastating. It learns Thunder for perfect accuracy in rain.

Greninja

The speedster with Protean changing its type to match its move. Greninja runs a special set with Hydro Pump, Dark Pulse, Ice Beam, and Extrasensory. Battle Bond Greninja transforms into Ash-Greninja with base 153 Special Attack.

Swampert

The Water/Ground tank with fantastic defensive typing giving it only one weakness (Grass). Swampert sets Stealth Rock, phases with Roar, and attacks with Earthquake and Waterfall. Mega Swampert gains Swift Swim in rain.

Toxapex

The ultimate physical wall with Regenerator, Baneful Bunker, and Toxic Spikes. Toxapex's massive base 152 Defense and access to Recover make it nearly unkillable on the physical side. It spreads status and hazards endlessly.

Rotom-Wash

The Water/Electric pivot with Levitate removing its Ground weakness. Rotom-Wash has only one weakness (Grass) and great defensive typing. It runs Volt Switch, Hydro Pump, Will-O-Wisp, and Pain Split.

Dracovish

The fossil Pokemon with Strong Jaw and Fishious Rend, which doubles in power when Dracovish moves first. With Choice Scarf, Dracovish outspeeds almost everything and OHKOs most neutral targets.

Battle Strategy Tips

  • Rain boosts Water moves by 50% and makes Thunder and Hurricane 100% accurate. Swift Swim doubles the Speed of Water-types in rain, turning Pokemon like Drednaw and Kingdra into terrifying sweepers.
  • The Ice/Water defensive core covers both types' weaknesses. Ice covers Grass (Water's weakness), Water covers Rock and Fire (Ice's weaknesses). Lapras, Slowbro, and Pelipper exemplify this pairing.
  • Water is the best defensive type in the game with only two weaknesses and four resistances. Use Water-types to check Fire, Ice, and Steel attackers. Always pair with a Grass-resisting teammate.
