About the Ground Type

Ground is one of the 18 Pokemon types introduced in Generation 1. Ground-type Pokemon are associated with earth, sand, and earthquakes. Ground moves hit 5 types super effectively (Fire, Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel), tied with Fighting for the most of any type. Defensively, Ground provides a complete Electric immunity, which is crucial for blocking Volt Switch momentum. Ground-types get a 50% Special Defense boost in Sandstorm, making them excellent special walls on Sand teams.

Notable Ground-type Pokemon

Garchomp

The Mach Pokemon with base 130 Attack and 102 Speed. Garchomp is one of the most feared sweepers with Swords Dance + Earthquake. Rough Skin or Sand Veil make it even more dangerous on Sand teams.

Groudon

The Continent Pokemon with Drought setting harsh sun. Primal Groudon has base 180 Attack and Desolate Land blocking Water moves. Its Precipice Blades hits both opponents in doubles with 120 base power.

Landorus

The Sand Force Pokemon with Intimidate in its Incarnate form. Landorus-T is the most used Pokemon in competitive history. It sets rocks, pivots with U-turn, and attacks with Earthquake.

Excadrill

The Mole Pokemon with Sand Rush doubling Speed in Sand. Excadrill is a terrifying sweeper on Sand teams with base 135 Attack. It runs Swords Dance, Earthquake, Iron Head, and Rock Slide.

Swampert

The Water/Ground starter with only one weakness (Grass). Swampert has great mixed bulk and sets Stealth Rock. Mega Swampert gains Swift Swim in rain.

Gliscor

The Fang Scorp with Poison Heal and a Toxic Orb. Gliscor recovers 1/8 HP each turn, is immune to status, and sets up with Swords Dance. It learns Roost for extra recovery.

Battle Strategy Tips

  • Ground has the best offensive coverage alongside Fighting, hitting 5 types super effectively. Earthquake is the most reliable spread move in doubles. Always have an Ice move to hit Ground types.
  • Ground provides a complete Electric immunity, which is huge for stopping Volt Switch momentum. Pair Ground-types with Flying or Levitate Pokemon for synergy.
  • Sand teams rely on Ground-types. Tyranitar or Hippowdon set Sand, boosting Rock-types' Special Defense by 50%. Sand also gives Sand Rush Pokemon like Excadrill double Speed.
