About the Rock Type

Rock is one of the 18 Pokemon types introduced in Generation 1. Rock-type Pokemon are associated with mountains, minerals, and fossils. Rock moves are super effective against Fire, Ice, Flying, and Bug types. Defensively, Rock has 5 weaknesses but gets a 50% Special Defense boost in Sandstorm, making Rock-types excellent special walls on Sand teams. Rock is the type of Stealth Rock, the most important entry hazard in competitive Pokemon.

Battle Strategy Tips

  • Rock-types get a 50% Special Defense boost in Sandstorm. Tyranitar and Gigalith set Sand, turning Rock teammates into special walls. Sand also chips non-Rock/Steel/Ground opponents.
  • Stealth Rock is the most important entry hazard. It deals 12.5% damage on switch-in to neutral targets and up to 50% to Rock-weak types (Fire, Ice, Flying, Bug).
  • Rock has 5 common weaknesses but also 4 useful resistances. The Normal resistance lets Rock-types switch into Extreme Speed and Body Slam safely.
