About the Poison Type

Poison is one of the 18 Pokemon types introduced in Generation 1. Poison-type Pokemon are associated with toxins, venom, and pollution. Before Generation 6, Poison was considered a weak type, but the introduction of Fairy-types gave it new relevance -- Poison moves are super effective against Fairy, making Poison the premier anti-Fairy type. Defensively, Poison resists Fighting, Poison, Bug, Grass, and Fairy. Poison-types are immune to the Poison status condition and remove Toxic Spikes when switching in.

Battle Strategy Tips

  • Poison is the best answer to Fairy-types. Poison hits Fairy super effectively while resisting Fairy moves. Every team that struggles with Tapu Lele, Iron Valiant, or Azumarill needs a Poison move.
  • Poison-types are immune to the Poison status (including Toxic). Use Poison-types to absorb Toxic from opposing Blissey and stall breakers. They also absorb Toxic Spikes on switch-in.
  • Toxic Spikes are the best hazard for stall teams. Poison-types set Toxic Spikes, which poison grounded enemies on switch-in. Toxapex, Dragalge, and Qwilfish excel at this role.
