About the Ice Type

Ice is one of the 18 Pokemon types introduced in Generation 1. Ice-type Pokemon are known as glass cannons -- they have the best offensive coverage in the game (hitting Dragon, Flying, Ground, and Grass super effectively) but the worst defensive profile with 4 common weaknesses and only 1 resistance. Ice moves are essential for checking Dragon-types, which resist the classic elemental quartet. Every competitive team should carry at least one Ice move.

Battle Strategy Tips

  • Ice is the best offensive type -- it hits Dragon, Flying, Ground, and Grass super effectively. Every competitive team needs an Ice move somewhere. Ice Beam on a Water-type covers the team's Dragon weakness.
  • Ice is the worst defensive type with 4 common weaknesses and only 1 resistance. Never use a pure Ice-type as a defensive wall. Pair Ice with Water, Steel, or Ghost for defensive synergy.
  • Snow boosts Ice-type Defense by 50%. Aurora Veil sets up both Reflect and Light Screen in Snow. Alolan Ninetales with Snow Warning is the premier lead for Snow teams.
