About the Grass Type

Grass is one of the 18 Pokemon types introduced in Generation 1. Grass-type Pokemon are associated with nature, plants, and growth. Grass moves are super effective against Water, Ground, and Rock types. Defensively, Grass has 5 weaknesses but also 4 useful resistances including Water and Electric. Grass-types are immune to powder and spore moves (Spore, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder), making them excellent switch-ins to status spreaders like Amoonguss and Breloom.

Notable Grass-type Pokemon

Venusaur

The Kanto starter with Chlorophyll in sun doubling its Speed. Mega Venusaur gains Thick Fat, removing its Fire and Ice weaknesses. It runs Giga Drain, Sludge Bomb, Earthquake, and Synthesis for reliable recovery.

Celebi

The Time Travel Pokemon with Natural Cure and great mixed bulk. Celebi sets Stealth Rock, spreads status with Thunder Wave, and attacks with Giga Drain and Psychic. Its base 100 all-around stats make it very flexible.

Meowscarada

The Grass/Dark starter with Protean and Flower Trick, a 70 base power move that always crits. Meowscarada is a fast physical attacker with base 123 Speed. It runs Flower Trick, Knock Off, U-turn, and Triple Axel.

Rillaboom

The Grass starter with Grassy Surge setting Grassy Terrain. Terrain boosts Grass moves by 30% and halves Earthquake damage. Rillaboom's Grassy Glide becomes priority in terrain, making it a terrifying sweeper.

Ferrothorn

The Grass/Steel wall with Iron Barbs and entry hazard setup. Ferrothorn has 11 resistances including Dragon and Fairy. It sets Spikes, Stealth Rock, and Leech Seed, then attacks with Gyro Ball and Power Whip.

Amoonguss

The defensive pivot with Regenerator and access to Spore, the only 100% accurate sleep move. Amoonguss tanks hits from both sides, puts threats to sleep, and pivots with Regenerator healing.

Ogerpon

The mask-wielding Grass-type with four forms, each with a different secondary typing and Ability. Its base 120 Attack with Ivy Cudgel makes it a powerful physical attacker.

Battle Strategy Tips

  • Grass-types are immune to powder and spore moves like Spore, Stun Spore, Sleep Powder, and Poison Powder. Use Grass-types to switch into these moves from Amoonguss, Breloom, and other status spreaders.
  • Despite having 5 weaknesses, Grass-types have 4 key resistances (Water, Electric, Ground, Grass). Grass is critical for stopping Ground and Water sweepers. Pair with Steel to cover all 5 weaknesses.
  • Grassy Terrain boosts Grass moves by 30%, gives 1/16 HP recovery each turn, and halves Earthquake power. Rillaboom and Arboliva set this terrain, making Grass-types even more threatening.
