About the Dragon Type

Dragon is one of the 18 Pokemon types introduced in Generation 1. Dragon-type Pokemon are associated with dragons, mythical beasts, and immense power. Dragon moves are only super effective against themselves, but resist 4 important types (Fire, Water, Electric, Grass). Dragons are known for having the highest base stat totals -- most pseudo-legendary Pokemon (Dragonite, Garchomp, Salamence, etc.) are Dragon-types. Fairy-types gained a Dragon immunity in Generation 6.

Notable Dragon-type Pokemon

Dragonite

Rayquaza

The Sky High Pokemon with Air Lock negating weather. Base 150 Attack and 115 Speed. Mega Rayquaza has Delta Stream reducing Flying weaknesses. It learns Dragon Ascent and V-create.

Baxcalibur

The pseudo-legendary Dragon/Ice with base 145 Attack. Thermal Exchange prevents burns. It sets up Dragon Dance and sweeps with Glaive Rush and Icicle Crash.

Garchomp

The Mach Pokemon with base 130 Attack and 102 Speed. With Swords Dance, it sweeps through teams with Earthquake, Outrage, and Stone Edge. Rough Skin punishes contact.

Salamence

The Dragon Pokemon with Intimidate and base 135 Attack. Mega Salamence has Aerilate turning Normal moves into Flying moves. It runs Swords Dance with Double-Edge.

Haxorus

The Axe Jaw Pokemon with base 147 Attack -- the highest of all non-legendary Dragons. Mold Breaker lets it hit through Levitate and Multiscale.

Battle Strategy Tips

  • Dragon is only super effective against itself, but it resists Fire, Water, Electric, and Grass. Dragons wall the classic elemental quartet. Use them as switch-ins to Fire and Water attacks.
  • Fairy-types gained a Dragon immunity in Gen 6, making them the ultimate Dragon check. Every team needs a Fairy or Steel type to handle Dragon-types.
  • Dragon Dance is the most feared setup move. Dragons with Dragon Dance boost both Attack and Speed, letting them outspeed and OHKO almost everything after one turn.
