Sylveon is a Fairy-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 6 in the Kalos region. It is one of the eight Eeveelutions and evolves from Eevee when it knows a Fairy-type move and has at least two levels of friendship. In earlier generations, the requirement was having high affection in Pokemon-Amie/Refresh. Sylveon is known as the Intertwining Pokemon, and its design features ribbon-like feelers that it uses to wrap around its Trainer's arm affectionately.
Sylveon's introduction marked the debut of the Fairy type, which was created to balance the previously dominant Dragon type. As a pure Fairy-type, Sylveon is immune to Dragon moves and resists Dark, Fighting, and Bug. Its Hidden Ability Pixilate is the cornerstone of its competitive viability — it turns Normal-type moves into Fairy-type and boosts their power by 20%. This gives Sylveon access to a powerful STAB Hyper Voice that bypasses Substitute and hits both targets in doubles.
Sylveon's competitive niche is built around its Pixilate ability combined with Hyper Voice. In double battles, Hyper Voice hits both opposing Pokemon, making Sylveon an excellent spread attacker. With base 110 Special Attack and 130 Special Defense, Sylveon is both offensively threatening and specially bulky. Its base 95 HP gives it good overall bulk when combined with its Special Defense.
A standard VGC Sylveon set runs Hyper Voice as the primary STAB move. Mystical Fire provides coverage against Steel-types that resist Fairy. Protect is essential for positioning and scouting. The fourth move is often Yawn to pressure switch-ins, Helping Hand to support a partner, or Quick Attack for priority. Sylveon commonly holds a Throat Spray, which activates when it uses Hyper Voice, boosting its Special Attack by one stage. A Pixilate-boosted Hyper Voice after Throat Spray hits extremely hard, OHKOing many neutral targets.
Sylveon's EV spread typically maximizes HP and Special Attack, with enough Speed to outspeed specific threats. An alternative set uses a Choice Specs to maximize immediate power, turning Hyper Voice into an absolute nuke. Sylveon's main drawbacks are its low base Speed (60) and mediocre Defense (65). Physical attackers like Garchomp, Excadrill, and Landorus-T can OHKO Sylveon with super effective moves. Trick Room teams can mitigate the Speed issue, allowing Sylveon to move first under Trick Room.

Sylveon has been a consistent presence in VGC since its introduction. In the 2023 and 2024 regulation sets, Sylveon saw increased usage as a counter to the dominant Dragon-types like Garchomp, Dragonite, and Walking Wake. Its Pixilate Hyper Voice is one of the few reliable spread moves in the format that hits through Wide Guard, making it a valuable asset in double battles.
Common partners for Sylveon include Indeedee-F, whose Psychic Terrain protects Sylveon from priority moves, and Amoonguss, which redirects Fighting-type attacks away from Sylveon with Rage Powder. Tera Fire or Tera Water are common tera types for Sylveon to flip its Steel and Poison weaknesses. In Smogon singles, Sylveon is ranked in the UU tier where it functions as a special wall and cleric with Wish support. Its main counters include Physically-defensive Steel-types like Heatran, Celesteela, and Corviknight, which resist Fairy and can set up on Sylveon.
