Gardevoir Overview

Gardevoir is a Psychic/Fairy-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 3 in the Hoenn region. It evolves from Kirlia starting at level 30, which evolves from Ralts starting at level 20. Known as the Embrace Pokemon, Gardevoir is deeply loyal to its trainer and is said to create a black hole to protect its trainer if needed. It gained the Fairy typing in Generation 6, replacing its pure Psychic typing.

Gardevoir is a graceful, elegant Pokemon resembling a dancer in a flowing white and green dress. Its design conveys refinement and psychic power. With 125 base Special Attack and 115 base Special Defense, Gardevoir is a specially oriented Pokemon. Its signature move line includes Moonblast (Fairy STAB), Psychic (Psychic STAB), and the unique support move Healing Wish.

Battle Strategy

Gardevoir functions as a specially offensive attacker with great type coverage. Moonblast is its primary STAB, hitting Dark-types super effectively. Psychic or Psyshock hits Poison and Fighting-types. Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, and Focus Blast provide coverage against Steel, Ghost, and Dark-types respectively. Gardevoir's ability Trace can copy useful abilities like Intimidate, Water Absorb, or Regenerator.

Mega Gardevoir gains 165 base Special Attack, 135 base Special Defense, and the Pixilate ability, which turns Normal-type moves into Fairy-type and boosts them by 30%. Hyper Voice becomes a 117-base-power Fairy-type spread move in doubles. This is Gardevoir's most dangerous weapon. A standard Mega set runs Hyper Voice, Psyshock, Focus Blast or Thunderbolt, and Substitute or Calm Mind.

Gardevoir can also function as a specially defensive cleric with Wish, Heal Bell, and screens. However, its 68/65/65 physical bulk makes it vulnerable to physical attackers. Choice Specs Gardevoir hits extremely hard but locks it into one move. Trick allows Gardevoir to cripple walls by giving them Choice Specs. Calm Mind sets boost its already high Special Attack and Special Defense, making it a dangerous late-game sweeper.

Competitive Usage

Gardevoir is a solid UU and OU threat, valued for its powerful Fairy STAB and coverage. Mega Gardevoir with Pixilate Hyper Voice is a devastating wallbreaker in OU. In Generation 9, Gardevoir is ranked in UU. Its main drawbacks are poor physical bulk, mediocre Speed, and a 4x weakness to Ghost and Poison. Common checks include physically offensive Ghost-types like Gholdengo and Dragapult (immune to Psychic, resist Fairy), Steel-types like Heatran and Scizor (resist Fairy, hit hard), and faster specially defensive threats that can OHKO with Shadow Ball or Sludge Wave.
