Togekiss Overview

Togekiss is a Fairy/Flying-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 4 in the Sinnoh region. It evolves from Togetic when exposed to a Shiny Stone, which evolves from Togepi when leveled up with high friendship. Known as the Jubilee Pokemon, Togekiss is said to bring joy and good fortune to those it encounters. It gained the Fairy typing in Generation 6, giving it a Dragon immunity.

Togekiss is a large, white, avian Pokemon with a blue and red triangular pattern on its chest. Its design is gentle and angelic, with a flowing tail and wings. Togekiss has 120 base Special Attack and 85/95/115 bulk, making it a durable special attacker. Its signature ability Serene Grace doubles the chance of additional move effects.

Battle Strategy

Togekiss's infamous paraflinch strategy relies on Serene Grace and Thunder Wave. With Serene Grace, Air Slash's 30% flinch chance becomes 60%. Thunder Wave paralyzes the opponent (reducing Speed to 25% and giving a 25% chance of full immobility). Combined, the opponent has only a 30% chance to act each turn: 25% full paralysis + 60% flinch = 70% failure rate.

A standard Togekiss set runs Air Slash, Thunder Wave, Roost, and Heal Bell or Nasty Plot. Leftovers provides passive recovery. The strategy is to paralyze an opponent, then spam Air Slash until they fail to act. Roost keeps Togekiss healthy, and Heal Bell removes status from the team. Nasty Plot can be used when Togekiss has a free turn to boost its Special Attack.

Togekiss can also run a Choice Specs set for immediate power. With 120 base Special Attack and STAB Air Slash, it hits hard while maintaining the flinch chance. Dazzling Gleam provides Fairy STAB, Fire Blast covers Steel-types, and Trick cripples walls. The defensive set uses Defog to clear hazards and Thunder Wave to support the team.

Competitive Usage

Togekiss has been a consistent UU and OU threat, valued for its paraflinch strategy and good bulk. In Generation 9, Togekiss is ranked in UU. Its main drawbacks are its 4x Rock weakness and reliance on hax for the paraflinch strategy. Common checks include Rock Blast users that break through Substitute, Electric-types like Rotom-Wash and Tapu Koko (immune to Thunder Wave, resist Air Slash), Stealth Rock (Togekiss takes 50% from the hazard), and Taunt users that prevent Thunder Wave and Roost.
