Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokemon introduced in Generation 1. Created by genetic manipulation from Mew's DNA, Mewtwo is known as the Genetic Pokemon and is considered one of the most powerful Psychic-types in existence. It is the final member of the Kanto region's legendary trio alongside Mew and the bird trio.
Mewtwo is a tall, bipedal humanoid Pokemon with a pale purple body, a long purple tail, and three fingers on each hand. Its design conveys intelligence and power, reflecting its origin as a genetically engineered superweapon. Mewtwo has two Mega Evolutions: Mega Mewtwo X gains Fighting as a secondary type with Steadfast ability, while Mega Mewtwo Y becomes an even more powerful special attacker with 194 base Special Attack and Insomnia ability.
Mewtwo's base 154 Special Attack and 130 Speed make it one of the fastest and hardest-hitting special attackers in Pokemon. Its signature move Psystrike deals physical damage based on the target's Defense stat while using Mewtwo's Special Attack, making it effective against specially defensive walls. Standard coverage includes Aura Sphere, Ice Beam, Fire Blast, and Shadow Ball.
Mega Mewtwo Y has an astronomical 194 base Special Attack, the highest of any Pokemon, alongside 140 Speed. This form is purely offensive, running Timid nature with Psystrike, Aura Sphere, Ice Beam, and Recover or Calm Mind. Mega Mewtwo X trades some Speed for bulk and the Fighting typing, gaining 190 base Attack. It runs Close Combat alongside Zen Headbutt or Psychic with Bulk Up for setup.
In formats without Megas, Mewtwo often runs a Life Orb or Choice Specs set to maximize its offensive pressure. Its wide movepool includes coverage for nearly every type, making it difficult to defensively check. Taunt prevents opposing status moves, and Recover grants it longevity.

Mewtwo is a staple of Ubers tier in Smogon and restricted formats in VGC. Its combination of Speed, power, and movepool depth makes it a top-tier threat in any format it is legal in. Mega Mewtwo Y is generally considered the stronger form due to its unmatched special offense. Mewtwo checks include Dark-types like Tyranitar and Yveltal that resist Psychic and can OHKO back with Knock Off or Sucker Punch. In VGC restricted formats, Mewtwo often partners with Xerneas (which resists Dark) or Primal Groudon (which handles Steel-types) to form a powerful duo.
