Mew is a Psychic-type Mythical Pokemon introduced in Generation 1. Known as the New Species Pokemon, Mew is said to contain the DNA of all Pokemon, giving it the ability to learn almost any move. It was the original legendary of the Kanto region, hidden in the game files and only distributed through official Nintendo events. Mew has a perfectly balanced stat spread of 100 in every category.
Mew is a small, pink, cat-like Pokemon with a long tail and large blue eyes. Its design is minimalist and cute, belying its incredible power and versatility. Mew's signature move is Transform, which it shares with Ditto. In Generation 7, Mew received a unique Z-Move called Genesis Supernova, a 185-base-power Psychic-type special attack that sets up Psychic Terrain.
Mew's greatest competitive strength is its movepool, the largest of any Pokemon. It can learn every TM, every tutor move, and many egg moves. This versatility allows Mew to fill almost any team role: bulky support with Stealth Rock, Defog, Will-O-Wisp, and Knock Off; sweeper with Swords Dance and physical coverage; specially offensive with Nasty Plot; or stallbreaker with Taunt and setup.
A standard defensive Mew set runs Stealth Rock, Defog, Will-O-Wisp, and Knock Off with maximum HP and Defense investment. Its ability Synchronize punishes status-inducing moves, as the opponent also gets burned or paralyzed. In offensive roles, Mew can use Swords Dance with Drain Punch, Zen Headbutt, and Ice Beam or Fire Blast to hit various threats.
Mew's 100 base stats across the board mean it is solid but not exceptional in any area. Its role is determined entirely by its moveset. Choice Scarf sets with Trick can cripple walls. Baton Pass sets pass Swords Dance or Nasty Plot boosts to teammates. Mew is one of the most unpredictable Pokemon in competitive play.
Mew
Mythical Pokemon
Mew has been a mainstay in UU and OU tiers across generations, valued for its unparalleled versatility. In Generation 9, Mew sits in UU where its wide movepool allows it to adapt to nearly any metagame. Common checks depend on Mew's set: physically bulky Dark-types like Tyranitar check special variants specially defensive Steel-types like Heatran check physical variants Knock Off and item removal severely hinder Mew, so it often runs Colbur Berry to survive a Dark-type hit. In VGC, Mew has seen usage as a support Pokemon with Tailwind, Pollen Puff (via Metronome or sketch), and Transform to copy powerful restricted Pokemon.
