Dragonite Overview

Dragonite is a Dragon/Flying-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 1 in the Kanto region. It evolves from Dragonair starting at level 55, which evolves from Dratini starting at level 30. Known as the Dragon Pokemon, Dragonite was the first Dragon-type evolutionary line in Pokemon history.

Dragonite is a large, bipedal dragon with orange skin, small wings, and a cheerful, friendly expression. Despite its gentle appearance, Dragonite possesses immense physical power with 134 base Attack and 100 base Special Attack. Its signature ability Multiscale halves damage from attacks when at full HP, making Dragonite deceptively bulky.

Battle Strategy

Dragonite's primary competitive set is the Dragon Dance sweeper. With Multiscale intact, Dragonite can survive most hits at full HP, set up a Dragon Dance to boost its Attack and Speed, and then sweep with STAB moves like Outrage or Dragon Claw and coverage like Earthquake, Ice Punch, or Fire Punch. Roost provides recovery to restore Multiscale.

The standard Dragon Dance set runs Lum Berry to prevent status conditions, or Heavy-Duty Boots to avoid Stealth Rock damage. With +1 Speed, Dragonite outspeeds the entire unboosted metagame. The combination of Multiscale, Roost, and Dragon Dance makes Dragonite one of the most reliable setup sweepers in Pokemon history.

Dragonite can also run a Choice Band set for immediate power, using Extreme Speed as priority. With 134 base Attack and STAB on Extreme Speed (a rare Normal-type priority move), Dragonite acts as a powerful revenge killer. Dual Wingbeat provides Flying STAB, and Earthquake or Superpower covers Steel-types that resist Dragon.

Competitive Usage

Dragonite has been a consistent OU-tier threat across all generations. Its combination of Multiscale, Dragon Dance, and Extreme Speed gives it a unique niche among Dragon-types. In Generation 9, Dragonite gained Tera Normal to boost Extreme Speed even further, making it one of the top threats in the OU metagame. Common checks include Tapu Lele (blocks priority with Psychic Terrain), Skarmory (physically defensive Flying-type), and Weavile (Ice Shard priority). Dragonite also functions well in VGC as a Dynamax candidate with Max Airstream boosting its team's Speed.
