Charizard is a Fire/Flying-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 1 in the Kanto region. Known as the Flame Pokemon, Charizard is one of the most popular and recognizable Pokemon worldwide. It evolves from Charmeleon starting at level 36, which itself evolves from Charmander starting at level 16.
Charizard is a large, dragon-like Pokemon with orange scales, cream-colored wings, and a fiery tail. Despite its dragon appearance, Charizard is not a Dragon-type in its base form. It gained the Dragon typing through Mega Evolution X, which turns it into a Fire/Dragon-type with Tough Claws ability. Mega Evolution Y boosts its Special Attack significantly with Drought ability, summoning harsh sunlight.
Charizard holds a unique place in competitive Pokemon due to its two Mega Evolutions. Mega Charizard X gains the Dragon typing, boosting its Attack to 130 with Tough Claws, making physical sets with Dragon Dance, Flare Blitz, and Earthquake extremely threatening. Mega Charizard Y has 159 base Special Attack and Drought, enabling sun-boosted Fire Blasts that obliterate most neutral targets.
In standard play without Megas, Charizard excels as a specially offensive attacker with 109 base Special Attack and 100 base Speed. A typical set runs Fire Blast or Flamethrower as STAB, Solar Beam or Air Slash for coverage, and Roost for recovery. Heavy-Duty Boots are essential to avoid Stealth Rock damage, as Charizard takes 50% from the hazard due to its Rock weakness.
Charizard's Gigantamax form from Sword and Shield features G-Max Wildfire, which deals 1/6 of each non-Fire-type opponent's max HP for four turns. This makes Charizard a powerful wallbreaker in Max formats, capable of wearing down teams even through resistances.
Charizard
Current form
Charizard has appeared in nearly every competitive format since Generation 1. In VGC 2020 with Dynamax, Charizard was one of the most dominant forces, pairing with Venusaur under sun to form a potent offensive core. In Smogon's OU tier, Mega Charizard X and Y have both seen significant usage, with X preferred for its defensive typing and setup potential, and Y for its immediate wallbreaking power. Charizard's primary weakness is Stealth Rock, which halves its HP on switch-in, making hazard control mandatory on any team featuring it.
