Typhlosion Overview

Typhlosion is a Fire-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 2 in the Johto region. It evolves from Quilava starting at level 36, which evolves from Cyndaquil starting at level 14. Typhlosion is the final evolution of the Johto Fire-type starter, chosen by trainers in Professor Elm's lab. It is known as the Volcano Pokemon, with flames erupting from its back when it is agitated or battling.

Typhlosion is a bipedal, weasel-like Pokemon with blue and cream fur and flames burning on its back. The flames intensify when Typhlosion is angry or excited. Its base 109 Special Attack and 100 Speed make it a fast and powerful special attacker. The Hisuian form discovered in Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a Fire/Ghost-type with the Frisk or Flash Fire ability, gaining a different movepool and typing.

Battle Strategy

Typhlosion's signature move is Eruption, a 150-base-power Fire move that loses power as Typhlosion takes damage. This makes Typhlosion a fearsome wallbreaker at full HP. A Choice Scarf set with Eruption at full HP can OHKO many neutral targets and heavily damage resists. With 100 base Speed and Choice Scarf, Typhlosion outspeeds the entire unboosted metagame and fires off Eruptions.

The standard Typhlosion set runs Eruption, Flamethrower or Fire Blast (as a backup when damaged), Solar Beam, and Focus Blast or Extrasensory. Choice Specs provides maximum immediate power, while Choice Scarf trades power for Speed. Timid nature maximizes Speed. Flash Fire (if available) provides a Fire immunity, allowing Typhlosion to switch into predicted Fire moves and boost its own.

Hisuian Typhlosion is Fire/Ghost-type, trading Speed for a different defensive profile. Its Infernal Parade move (the Hisuian replacement for Shadow Ball) has 60 base power but doubles to 120 when the target has a status condition. With 110 base Special Attack and 95 base Speed, Hisuian Typhlosion functions as a specially offensive Ghost-type with Will-O-Wisp support.

Competitive Usage

Typhlosion is ranked in NU and PU in most generations, where Eruption Choice Scarf is its primary set. Its viability depends on maintaining full HP for Eruption's power, which makes Stealth Rock and priority moves significant threats. Heavy-Duty Boots help with hazard immunity. Hisuian Typhlosion has found a different niche with its Ghost typing and status-boosted Infernal Parade. Common checks include specially defensive Water-types like Milotic and Gastrodon, faster Pokemon that can OHKO before Typhlosion moves, and priority users like Dragonite and Scizor.
