Infernape Overview

Infernape is a Fire/Fighting-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 4 in the Sinnoh region. It evolves from Monferno starting at level 36, which evolves from Chimchar starting at level 14. Infernape is the final evolution of the Sinnoh Fire-type starter, chosen by trainers in Professor Rowan's lab. Its design is inspired by Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Chinese mythology.

Infernape is a bipedal, ape-like Pokemon with orange and cream fur, a flame on its head, and a long tail with a flame tip. Its design reflects its Fire typing and martial arts inspiration. Infernape has 104 base Attack and 104 base Special Attack with 108 base Speed, making it one of the fastest mixed attackers in the game. Its hidden ability Iron Fist boosts punching moves by 20%.

Battle Strategy

Infernape's mixed attacking capability is its defining feature. It can run both physical and special moves on the same set, making it difficult to wall. A standard mixed set runs Close Combat (physical Fighting STAB), Flamethrower or Fire Blast (special Fire STAB), Grass Knot (for Water, Ground, and Rock-types), and Hidden Power Ice or Thunder Punch for coverage.

Iron Fist Infernape boosts Mach Punch, Thunder Punch, Ice Punch, Fire Punch, and Drain Punch by 20%. A physical Iron Fist set uses Close Combat, Mach Punch (priority STAB with Iron Fist boost), Thunder Punch, and Flare Blitz or Fire Punch. Choice Band or Life Orb boost damage further. With 108 base Speed, Infernape outspeeds many key threats including Garchomp, Salamence, and Landorus.

Nasty Plot Infernape boosts its 104 base Special Attack to threatening levels. With Fire Blast, Focus Blast, Grass Knot, and Vacuum Wave (special Fighting priority), it can break through most walls. Substitute protects it from status moves and revenge killers. Focus Sash ensures Infernape survives at least one hit to set up.

Competitive Usage

Infernape has been a solid OU and UU threat since its introduction. Its Speed tier and mixed attacking make it unpredictable and dangerous. In Generation 9, Infernape is ranked in UU. Common checks include faster Pokemon like Choice Scarf users, bulky Water-types like Slowbro and Milotic (resisting both STABs), physically defensive Flying-types like Corviknight and Skarmory, and priority users like Dragonite and Scizor that can pick off a weakened Infernape. Infernape's main drawback is its fragility with 76/71/71 bulk.
