Snorlax Overview

Snorlax is a Normal-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 1 in the Kanto region. It evolves from Munchlax when leveled up with high friendship. Known as the Sleeping Pokemon, Snorlax is famous for its enormous size, insatiable appetite, and ability to sleep anywhere. Its base 160 HP is among the highest of all Pokemon.

Snorlax is a massive, blue-and-cream-colored Pokemon with a round body, small ears, and a perpetually sleepy expression. Its weight of 460 kg makes it one of the heaviest Pokemon. Despite its sluggish appearance, Snorlax is a formidable battler with 110 base Attack and 110 base Special Defense, making it both bulky and threatening.

Battle Strategy

Snorlax's most iconic set is Curse + Rest + Sleep Talk. Curse boosts Snorlax's Attack and Defense while lowering Speed, which matters little since Snorlax is already slow. Rest heals Snorlax to full and cures status, while Sleep Talk lets it attack while asleep. Body Slam or Return provides reliable Normal STAB with paralysis chance, and Earthquake or Crunch covers Ghost and Steel-types.

In more offensive roles, Snorlax can run a Choice Band set with STAB Return, Earthquake, Pursuit, and Self-Destruct for massive damage. Thick Fat is the preferred ability, giving Snorlax resistances to Fire and Ice moves that would otherwise threaten it. With 110 base Special Defense and 160 HP, specially defensive Snorlax is one of the bulkiest special walls in the game.

Snorlax gained a Gigantamax form in Generation 8, featuring G-Max Replenish which has a chance to restore consumed berries. This pairs well with the Gluttony ability and a Figy Berry or Aguav Berry for instant 50% HP recovery when below 50% HP. Recycle can restore the berry, making Snorlax extremely difficult to KO.

Competitive Usage

Snorlax has been a staple of competitive Pokemon since Generation 1, consistently ranking in OU for multiple generations. Its combination of massive HP, useful resistances, and offensive presence makes it a flexible team component. In VGC, Snorlax has seen significant usage in Generation 8 with the Gigantamax + Gluttony + Berry strategy dominating the early meta. Common checks include Fighting-types like Conkeldurr, Lucario, and Machamp that OHKO with Close Combat or Dynamic Punch. In later generations, power creep and the prevalence of Heavy-Duty Boots have reduced Snorlax's dominance, but it remains a solid option in UU and OU.
