Hydreigon Overview

Hydreigon is a Dark/Dragon-type Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon introduced in Generation 5 in the Unova region. It evolves from Zweilous starting at level 64, which evolves from Deino starting at level 50. With a base stat total of 600, Hydreigon is the Pseudo-Legendary of the Unova region. Known as the Brutal Pokemon, it has three heads and a vicious temperament.

Hydreigon is a three-headed, six-winged dragon with a dark blue body, purple heads, and yellow eyes. Its design is inspired by the Yamata no Orochi, a multi-headed dragon from Japanese mythology. Hydreigon has 125 base Special Attack and 98 base Speed, making it a powerful special attacker. Levitate gives it a Ground immunity, covering one of its few weaknesses and making it a great switch-in to Earthquake users.

Battle Strategy

Hydreigon's primary set is a specially offensive wallbreaker with Choice Specs or Life Orb. Draco Meteor is its most powerful Dragon STAB, 2HKOing almost everything neutrally. Dark Pulse provides secondary Dark STAB with a 20% flinch chance. Flash Cannon, Fire Blast, Earth Power, and Surf provide extensive coverage. U-turn maintains momentum on switches.

With Levitate, Hydreigon is immune to Ground moves and Spikes, giving it safe entry against many common Stealth Rock and Spikes setters. This immunities allow it to switch in repeatedly without hazard damage on the Ground side. Hydreigon's 92/90/90 bulk lets it take neutral hits well, though it is vulnerable to Fighting, Bug, Fairy, Ice, and Dragon attacks.

Nasty Plot Hydreigon boosts its Special Attack to threatening levels. After a Nasty Plot, Draco Meteor OHKOes almost everything that does not resist it. Dark Pulse becomes a reliable STAB without the drawback of Draco Meteor's stat drops. Substitute protects Hydreigon from status and revenge killers, letting it fire off attacks safely.

Competitive Usage

Hydreigon has been a consistent UU and OU threat. Its excellent coverage, decent Speed, and Levitate give it a defined niche. In Generation 9, Hydreigon is ranked in UU. Common checks include Fairy-types like Tapu Fini, Clefable, and Azumarill (immune to Dragon, resist Dark), faster Dragon-types like Garchomp and Salamence (threaten with Outrage), and specially defensive Steel-types like Heatran and Empoleon (resist both STABs). Hydreigon's 4x weakness to Fairy is a significant liability in generations where Fairy-types are common.
