Garchomp is a Dragon/Ground-type Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon introduced in Generation 4 in the Sinnoh region. It evolves from Gabite starting at level 48, which evolves from Gible starting at level 24. With a base stat total of 600, Garchomp is the Pseudo-Legendary of the Sinnoh region. It is the signature Pokemon of Sinnoh Champion Cynthia and one of the most feared competitive Pokemon in history.
Garchomp is a large, blue-and-red shark-like dragon with fins that resemble jet wings, a torpedo-shaped body, and a star-shaped head. Its design evokes a land shark capable of flight. With 130 base Attack, 102 base Speed, and 108 HP, Garchomp combines excellent bulk with offensive power. Its Dragon/Ground typing gives it a Stealth Rock resistance and an Electric immunity.
Garchomp's Swords Dance set is legendary. With 130 base Attack, 102 base Speed, and a great defensive typing, Garchomp can find setup opportunities against many Pokemon. After one Swords Dance, Outrage or Dragon Claw and Earthquake become devastating STAB moves. Stone Edge or Fire Fang covers Pokemon that resist both Dragon and Ground, like Skarmory, Corviknight, and Togekiss.
Choice Scarf Garchomp is a fantastic revenge killer. With a Choice Scarf, Garchomp's Speed reaches 459 with a positive nature, outspeeding the entire unboosted metagame. It uses Outrage, Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Fire Fang or Crunch to hit a wide range of targets. Rough Skin punishes contact moves, chipping away at physical attackers that try to hit Garchomp.
Mega Garchomp gains 170 base Attack, 115 base Special Attack, and Sand Force ability, which boosts Rock, Ground, and Steel moves by 30% in sandstorm. However, Mega Garchomp's Speed drops to 92, making it slower than many key threats. This Speed loss hurt its viability compared to regular Garchomp. The Mega form runs Swords Dance, Earthquake, Dragon Claw, and Stone Edge under sand support.
Garchomp
Current form
Garchomp has been a top-tier OU Pokemon since its introduction in Generation 4. Its combination of stats, typing, and movepool make it one of the most consistent threats in the tier. In Smogon, Garchomp has been OU for every generation it has been legal. In VGC, Garchomp has seen extensive use as a physical sweeper and Dynamax candidate. Common checks include physically defensive Landorus-T (Intimidate, resist Ground, threatens with HP Ice), Weavile with Ice Shard, bulky Water-types like Rotom-Wash, and faster Dragon-types like Salamence and Choice Scarf users.
