Dragapult is a Dragon/Ghost-type pseudo-legendary Pokemon introduced in Generation 8 in the Galar region. It evolves from Drakloak starting at level 60, which evolves from Dreepy starting at level 50. Dragapult is known as the Stealth Pokemon, and its design is based on a stealth bomber and a salamander. The two smaller Dreepy that accompany it are launched like missiles from the holes in its horns, which references its signature move Dragon Darts.
Dragapult has the highest base Speed of any pseudo-legendary Pokemon at 142, a stat that puts it above nearly every unboosted threat in the game. Only a handful of Pokemon like Regieleki, Deoxys-Speed, and Ninjask outspeed it. This Speed, combined with base 120 Attack and 100 Special Attack, makes Dragapult one of the most dangerous offensive Pokemon in the competitive scene. Its Dragon/Ghost typing is excellent offensively, providing perfect neutral coverage on most of the metagame.
Dragapult can run both physical and special sets effectively, making it difficult to counter. The physical set uses Dragon Darts as its primary STAB — this move hits twice, which breaks Focus Sashes, Multi-Scale, and Sturdy. Phantom Force provides Ghost STAB and lets Dragapult evade attacks for a turn. U-turn maintains momentum. The fourth move is often Sucker Punch for priority or Will-O-Wisp to cripple physical attackers. A Choice Band boosts Dragon Darts to devastating power.
The special set uses Draco Meteor as nuke Dragon STAB, Shadow Ball for Ghost STAB, and coverage moves like Fire Blast for Steel-types, Thunderbolt for Water-types, or Hydro Pump for Ground and Rock-types. A Choice Specs set makes Dragapult a terrifying wallbreaker, while a choice Scarf set makes it nearly impossible to outspeed. Dragapult can also run a utility set with Will-O-Wisp, Hex, and Light Screen/Reflect to support the team while dealing respectable damage.
Dragapult's main weakness is its mediocre bulk (88/75/75). Despite its great typing, it cannot take many hits. Priority moves like Sucker Punch, Shadow Sneak, and Ice Shard threaten to pick it off when it is weakened. Fairy-types like Sylveon, Azumarill, and Iron Valiant completely wall Dragapult and threaten it back with super effective moves. Tera Steel or Tera Fire are common tera types to flip its Fairy and Ice weaknesses.
Dragapult
Pseudo-Legendary
Dragapult has been a staple in Smogon OU since its introduction. Its Speed tier is the primary draw — it outspeeds every unboosted Pokemon except Regieleki, meaning Dragapult almost always moves first. In OU, physical Dragapult with Dragon Darts is the most common set, often paired with Spikes or Stealth Rock support to secure KOs. The main counters to Dragapult include Blissey and Chansey, which wall special sets, and physically-defensive Fairy-types like Clefable and Hatterene.
In VGC, Dragapult has been a consistent presence in all Generation 8 and 9 formats. Its high Speed makes it an excellent lead for setting Light Screen and Reflect, or for using Will-O-Wisp to cripple opposing physical attackers. Dragapult pairs well with Gholdengo, whose Steel typing covers Dragapult's Fairy weakness while Dragapult covers Gholdengo's Ghost and Dark weaknesses. Tera Ghost boosts Phantom Force to threatening levels, while Tera Fire removes its Fairy weakness. Common checks include Tyranitar, whose Sand Stream breaks Focus Sash and who resists Dragapult's Ghost moves, and Sucker Punch users like Kingambit and Urshifu-Single Strike.
