Corviknight Overview

Corviknight is a Flying/Steel-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 8 in the Galar region. It evolves from Corvisquire starting at level 38, which evolves from Rookidee starting at level 18. Corviknight is known as the Raven Pokemon, and its design is based on a large raven or crow clad in metallic armor. It serves as the taxi service in the Galar region, flying people between towns — a role that reflects its reliable and sturdy nature.

Corviknight's Flying/Steel typing is excellent defensively, giving it 10 resistances, 2 immunities (Ground and Poison), and only 2 weaknesses (Fire and Electric). Its base 105 Defense and 98 HP make it a premier physical wall. Its Hidden Ability Mirror Armor is unique — it reflects any stat-lowering effects back to the attacker, punishing Intimidate switches, Sticky Web, and moves like Memento and Feather Dance. This makes Corviknight an excellent answer to physical attackers.

Battle Strategy

Corviknight's primary competitive role is as a defensive pivot and hazard removal. Its access to Roost gives it reliable recovery, while Defog removes entry hazards from both sides. U-turn lets Corviknight maintain momentum while switching out of unfavorable match-ups. Brave Bird provides Flying STAB, though the recoil adds up over time. Body Press, which uses Corviknight's Defense stat to deal damage (base 105), is a common attack that hits Rock and Steel-types super effectively.

A standard Corviknight set runs Roost, Defog, U-turn, and Brave Bird or Body Press. It typically holds a Rocky Helmet to punish contact attackers or Leftovers for passive recovery. Corviknight's EV spread maximizes HP and Defense, allowing it to check physical attackers like Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Excadrill. Mirror Armor is the preferred ability, as it deters Intimidate and discourages opponents from using stat-lowering moves.

Corviknight's main vulnerabilities are its 4x weakness to Fire and 2x weakness to Electric. Fire-types like Heatran, Volcarona, and Cinderace can OHKO Corviknight with their STAB moves. Electric-types like Tapu Koko and Regieleki threaten it as well. Corviknight also struggles against specially-defensive walls that it cannot wear down, like Blissey and Toxapex. Despite these checks, Corviknight's defensive utility and hazard control make it a staple in multiple tiers.

Competitive Usage

Corviknight has been a top-tier defensive Pokemon in Smogon OU since its introduction in Generation 8. Its combination of reliable recovery, hazard removal, and excellent defensive typing make it one of the best defensive pivots in the tier. Corviknight's main competition comes from Skarmory, which has similar typing and role compression but lacks recovery without Roost (in older gens). Corviknight's access to Roost and higher HP give it the edge.

In VGC, Corviknight sees less usage due to the prevalence of Fire-types and special attackers that can bypass its physical bulk. However, it has a niche as a Tailwind setter with access to Roost and Body Press. Corviknight's main counters in singles include Heatran, which is immune to Fire and can set up Stealth Rock on Corviknight, and Tapu Koko, whose Electric STAB threatens an OHKO. Physically-defensive Fire-types like Rotom-Heat hard check Corviknight. Despite these counters, Corviknight remains a premier defensive choice in any format where it is legal.
