Ceruledge is a Fire/Ghost-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 9 in the Paldea region. It evolves from Charcadet when exposed to a Malicious Armor (the version exclusive item to Pokemon Violet). Its counterpart is Armarouge, which evolves with Auspicious Armor in Pokemon Scarlet. Ceruledge is known as the Fire Blades Pokemon, and its design features flaming sword blades on its arms, inspired by the concept of a fire-wielding ghost knight.
Ceruledge's signature move is Bitter Blade, a 90-base-power Fire-type physical move that restores the user's HP by 50% of the damage dealt. This gives Ceruledge exceptional longevity, allowing it to function both as a sweeper and as an offensive check to physical attackers. Its Flash Fire ability grants immunity to Fire-type moves and boosts its own Fire attacks by 50% when hit by one, making it an excellent switch-in to common Fire attacks from Pokemon like Cinderace and Arcanine.
Ceruledge's competitive strategy centers around its excellent offensive typing and Bitter Blade recovery. Fire/Ghost is one of the best offensive type combinations in the game, hitting 13 types for at least neutral damage and being resisted only by Dark, Fire, and Rock (and Flash Fire). Bitter Blade provides reliable STAB with built-in recovery, making Ceruledge difficult to wear down. Poltergeist or Shadow Claw provides Ghost STAB, with Poltergeist being the preferred option for its 110 base power.
A standard Ceruledge set runs Bitter Blade, Poltergeist, and coverage moves like Close Combat for Rock, Dark, and Normal-types, or Swords Dance to boost its Attack to threatening levels. Ceruledge typically holds a Life Orb to maximize damage or a Focus Sash to guarantee a Swords Dance setup. Its base 85 Speed is decent but requires it to run Jolly nature to outspeed key threats like Garchomp and Landorus-T. A Weak Armor set sacrifices bulk for Speed — when hit by a physical move, Ceruledge's Defense drops but its Speed rises sharply.
Ceruledge's main weaknesses are its vulnerability to Ghost, Dark, Water, Ground, and Rock moves. With base 75 HP and 80 Defense, it cannot take many physical hits. Dark-types like Tyranitar, Kingambit, and Chi-Yu resist or are immune to its STABs and threaten it with super effective moves. Tera Grass or Tera Fairy are common tera types to flip its weaknesses. Despite these drawbacks, Ceruledge's unique combination of power, recovery, and typing makes it a dangerous threat.

Ceruledge has carved a solid niche in Generation 9 competitive play. In Smogon, it is ranked in the UU tier where its Bitter Blade recovery and Swords Dance sweeping potential make it a dangerous win condition. Its ability to switch into common Fire-type attacks from Pokemon like Heatran, Cinderace, and Volcarona and gain a boost makes it a valuable team member. Common checks include Tyranitar, which resists Fire and is immune to Ghost, and Dondozo, which ignores Ceruledge's Attack boosts with Unaware.
In VGC, Ceruledge has seen usage as a Trick Room sweeper and as a redirector with Follow Me (through its evolution from Charcadet). Its Bitter Blade recovery is particularly valuable in doubles where extended battles are common. Ceruledge pairs well with Indeedee-F, whose Psychic Terrain blocks priority moves, and with Trick Room setters like Farigiraf. Tera Fire boosts Bitter Blade to insane levels, while Tera Grass removes its Water and Ground weaknesses. The main counter to Ceruledge is Incineroar, whose Intimidate reduces its Attack and Knock Off removes its item.
