How to find and farm mass outbreaks for efficient shiny hunting in modern Pokemon games.

Mass outbreaks return in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet as one of the most accessible shiny hunting methods. Every day, the in-game map shows several outbreaks marked with a glowing icon. Each outbreak features a specific Pokemon species spawning in high density in a designated area. Unlike previous games, SV outbreaks do not have a fixed number of encounters -- instead, the outbreak continues until you leave the area or clear it by defeating or catching enough Pokemon. The shiny odds increase based on the number of Pokemon you KO or catch from that outbreak.
The outbreak system refreshes each in-game day (or when you reset the clock). You can also clear outbreaks by defeating or catching 60+ Pokemon from the outbreak, at which point the icon disappears and normal spawn frequency returns. The key mechanic is that after defeating 60 Pokemon from the outbreak, the shiny rate for remaining spawns increases dramatically from 1/4096 to approximately 1/1365 without Shiny Charm, or 1/1024 with Shiny Charm. Using a Sparkling Power sandwich further improves these odds to approximately 1/683 (no charm) or 1/512 (with charm).
Step 1: Check the map for outbreaks of a Pokemon you want. Outbreaks refresh daily at midnight. You can force a refresh by advancing the system clock by one day. Step 2: Travel to the outbreak location. Make sure your party has a Pokemon that can use a move to quickly KO multiple targets (like a lead with a spread move). Step 3: KO or catch 60 Pokemon from the outbreak. Count manually or use the "Defeated" counter on the map that appears when you open the map near the outbreak. Step 4: After reaching 60 KOs, save the game. Step 5: Make a Sparking Power Level 3 sandwich matching the Pokemon's type (e.g., Sparkling Electric for Pikachu). Step 6: Begin encountering Pokemon in the outbreak. Use the Let's Go auto-battle mode to quickly check individual Pokemon -- your Pokemon will refuse to attack a shiny, alerting you to its presence.
The "reset" method is crucial for efficiency. After KOing 60+ Pokemon and saving, if no shiny appears in the outbreak, close the game completely and reload. The outbreak remains active (since you saved), and the spawns will refresh. This saves the time of KOing 60 Pokemon again. Each reload gives you a fresh batch of spawns at boosted rates, making this the fastest way to hunt specific outbreak Pokemon. On average, a shiny appears within 2-5 resets at max odds.
Legends Arceus introduced a different approach to mass outbreaks. In LA, "Massive Mass Outbreaks" appear on the map as glowing clusters indicating large groups of a specific Pokemon species. The shiny rate in these outbreaks is approximately 1/158 at base (before any research level bonuses) for the outbreak Pokemon. This is drastically higher than any previous outbreak method. When combined with a perfect research level (level 10 for all tasks) for the target species, the outbreak rate improves to approximately 1/128. The Shiny Charm further improves these odds to roughly 1/102.
The LA method involves flying to the outbreak location, then systematically checking each Pokemon using the lock-on feature. In LA, shinies appear in the overworld with a distinct sparkle sound and visual effect, making them easy to spot. If no shiny appears, return to Jubilife Village and re-enter the area to refresh the spawns. The combination of visible overworld shinies, high base rates, and quick resetting makes LA mass outbreaks one of the most time-efficient shiny hunting methods in the entire franchise.
| Condition | Base Rate | After 60 KOs | + Sparkling Power 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Shiny Charm | 1/4096 | ~1/1365 | ~1/683 |
| With Shiny Charm | 1/4096 | ~1/1024 | ~1/512 |
Pokemon that spawn in large groups and have obvious shiny color differences make the best outbreak targets. Eevee outbreaks are highly sought-after due to Eevee having 8 possible evolutions, giving you multiple shiny options from one hunt. Magikarp outbreaks are excellent because the shiny is bright gold and very obvious. Pokemon with subtle shiny differences (like Garchomp, whose shiny is barely different from the normal form) are harder to spot quickly in outbreaks. Use the Let's Go auto-battle feature for these -- your Pokemon refusing to attack is your best indicator.
Some Pokemon only appear in specific outbreak types or locations. For example, starters like Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly can appear in outbreaks but are extremely rare. Rare Pokemon like Eevee, Zorua, and Ditto require patience to find as outbreaks. Checking the map daily and targeting high-value shiny Pokemon maximizes the value of your hunting time. Keep a list of desired shiny Pokemon and prioritize their outbreaks when they appear on the map.
