Full Odds Shiny Hunting: The Original Challenge

Hunting shinies at the base rate of 1/4096 -- no modifiers, no shortcuts, just patience and persistence.

Understanding Full Odds

"Full odds" refers to shiny hunting without any probability-increasing modifiers: no Shiny Charm, no Masuda Method, no catch combo, no chain bonus. In Generations 6 through 9, the base shiny rate is 1/4096 per encounter. In Generations 2 through 5, it was 1/8192. Full odds hunting is the most challenging and time-intensive way to obtain a shiny Pokemon, but it is also considered the most rewarding by many veteran players because success depends purely on persistence and luck.

Full odds hunting encompasses several distinct methods: random encounters (walking through grass or caves), fishing, soft resetting for static encounters (Legendaries, gift Pokemon), and headbutting trees (Generation 4). Each method encounters the base 1/4096 rate with no multipliers. While seemingly inefficient compared to modern methods like mass outbreaks (1/512 or better with modifiers), full odds hunting remains popular for certain Pokemon that cannot be encountered through other methods, such as version-exclusive Legendaries or gift Pokemon.

Random Encounter Strategy

Random encounters involve repeatedly walking through grass, caves, or water to trigger wild battles. The key to efficient random encounters is maximizing encounters per minute. Use the Sweet Scent move (learned by many Grass-types like Roselia, Vileplume, and Bellossom) to trigger instant wild encounters in grass or water. Sweet Scent can be used anywhere with wild grass, creating an encounter immediately without walking. This dramatically increases encounters per minute from approximately 30-40 (walking) to 60-80 (Sweet Scent spamming).

Choose locations with high-density encounter tables and the specific Pokemon you want. Caves with Zubat or Geodude are popular for early-game full odds attempts due to high encounter density. Water routes with Repel Trick or the Old Rod can target specific species. Fishing encounters require patience but can produce specific water-type shinies. In Generation 9, the Let's Go auto-battle feature can be used to check large groups of Pokemon without entering battle, speeding up the process significantly.

Soft Resetting for Static Encounters

Soft resetting is the method for shiny hunting Legendary Pokemon, gift Pokemon, and stationary encounters (like the legendary birds in Sword and Shield or the Treasures of Ruin in Scarlet and Violet). The process: save in front of the encounter, interact to trigger the battle, check if the Pokemon is shiny. If not, perform a soft reset (L + R + Start + Select on most handheld systems) and repeat. Soft resetting runs at the full 1/4096 odds unless the Shiny Charm is held.

Soft resetting efficiency depends on the encounter animation length. The fastest soft resets in the series are in Generation 8 (Sword and Shield) with the Regi encounters, where the battle starts immediately. The slowest are Generation 4 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum) with long introductory cutscenes. Some static encounters are shiny-locked (cannot be shiny) in certain games -- checking Serebii or Bulbapedia before starting a soft reset hunt prevents wasted effort. In Generation 9, shiny locking applies to most story Legendaries like Koraidon and Miraidon, but box Legendaries are available shiny in other ways.

Horde Encounters (Generation 6)

Generation 6 (X and Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) introduced horde encounters, where five wild Pokemon appear simultaneously. Each Pokemon in a horde rolls its shiny chance independently, effectively checking five times per encounter. At full odds of 1/4096, each horde encounter has approximately a 1/819 chance of containing at least one shiny. This makes horde hunting roughly five times more efficient than single-encounter full odds hunting. Sweet Scent guarantees a horde encounter in grass or caves.

Specific areas in X and Y offer excellent horde hunting opportunities. Route 8 has hordes of Trevenant and Drifloon. Connecting Cave has hordes of Woobat and Aron. The key is to identify locations where the desired Pokemon appears in hordes. Use a Pokemon with Damp (to prevent self-destruct) or a Pressure lead (to increase encounter rate) for optimal results. Horde hunting remains one of the best full odds methods in the series due to the 5x encounter multiplier.

The Random Encounter Philosophy

Full odds hunting is more than a method -- it is a test of patience. Many veteran shiny hunters maintain a "random encounter" file in their current-generation game, where they play through the game normally but always keep an eye out for unexpected shinies. This approach emphasizes the "shiny" as a rare and special surprise rather than a goal to be achieved. Pokemon encountered full odds in the wild carry a certain prestige in the community because they represent pure chance rather than manipulated probabilities.

Some hunters combine full odds hunting with other activities: breeding for competitive Pokemon while carrying a foreign parent, EV training while encountering wild Pokemon, or completing the Pokedex while soft resetting for the version mascot. This multitasking approach makes the long hours feel more productive. The key to successful full odds hunting is setting realistic expectations: at 1/4096 odds, hunting for a specific Pokemon can take anywhere from a few encounters to several months of intermittent play.
