Hunt shiny Legendary Pokemon at 1/100 odds with the Crown Tundra's Dynamax Adventures mode.
Last updated: 2026-06-03
Dynamax Adventures are a co-op PvE mode introduced in the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield. In this mode, you and three other trainers (or AI partners) explore a Dynamax Lair, completing a series of three wild Pokemon encounters followed by a final battle against a Legendary Pokemon. The appeal for shiny hunters is extraordinary: the final Legendary encounter has a base shiny rate of 1/300, improving to 1/100 with the Shiny Charm. These are the best odds for hunting Legendary Pokemon in any Pokemon game to date.
Unlike most shiny hunting methods, Dynamax Adventures check the shiny status of the Pokemon at the end-of-adventure summary screen, not during the battle. This means you must complete the entire adventure (all 4 battles) to see if the Legendary is shiny. If it is not, you simply do not take it and restart. The Pokemon you encountered during the adventure can be taken as a consolation prize if you wish. The key advantage is that you can re-encounter the same Legendary Pokemon infinitely until it appears shiny.
The base shiny rate for the final Legendary encounter in Dynamax Adventures is 1/300, even without the Shiny Charm. With the Shiny Charm, the rate jumps to approximately 1/100. This is dramatically better than soft resetting for Legendaries (1/4096 base) or even Masuda Method breeding (1/512). Each adventure takes approximately 10-20 minutes depending on the path and AI quality. On average, you can expect a shiny Legendary every 100 adventures (with charm), meaning roughly 16-33 hours of gameplay per shiny Legendary.
An important mechanic: the game remembers which Legendary Pokemon you have already caught in Dynamax Adventures. Once you catch a specific Legendary, it will no longer appear as the final boss (you can encounter it again but it will not be catchable). Therefore, shiny hunters should NOT catch the Legendary on non-shiny runs. Instead, select "Don't take anything" at the end if the final Pokemon is not shiny. This preserves the encounter for future runs. The only exceptions are the common rental Pokemon encountered during the adventure, which can be taken freely.
Dynamax Adventures feature every Legendary Pokemon from Generations 1 through 8 (excluding those restricted by game version). Available encounters include: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres (both Kanto and Galarian forms), Mewtwo, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Heatran, Cresselia, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, Tapu Fini, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, and the Galarian Legendary birds. Some Legendaries are exclusive to one version of the game -- for example, Lunala is more common in Shield and Solgaleo in Sword.
Each specific Legendary can be shiny only if the game allows it. Most Legendaries in Dynamax Adventures are shiny-legal (their shiny forms exist in the game data and are not shiny-locked). A few, like the gift special Pokemon, might be shiny-locked. Checking the current legality on a resource like Serebii.net or Bulbapedia before committing to a hunt prevents wasted effort. All standard Legendaries from Generations 1 through 7 are obtainable as shinies through Dynamax Adventures.
To maximize Dynamax Adventures efficiency, always hunt one specific Legendary at a time. Before starting, talk to the scientist at the entrance who tells you which Legendary is at the end of the path. If it is not the one you want, talk to her again to reset the path. This rerolling takes only a few seconds and ensures you always hunt your target. During the adventure, prioritize wide-coverage moves and Pokemon with super-effective attacks against the final Legendary. Duskull/Gastly lines are excellent for Ghost-type Legendaries; Electric-types for Kyogre; Ice-types for Rayquaza and Ground-types.
The three rental choices at the start are crucial. Look at the moveset and typing of each rental -- a Pokemon with spread moves for the early waves and strong STAB for the final boss is ideal. Pay attention to your AI partners' Pokemon too. If the AI brings disadvantageous Pokemon (like Grass-types against Kyogre), consider resetting the rental selection. A run that fails to complete all 4 battles wastes approximately 10-15 minutes with zero shiny check. Consistent completion rate is the primary factor in overall shiny-per-hour efficiency.
The most important rule: NEVER catch a non-shiny Legendary. Each Legendary can only be caught once per save file. If you catch a non-shiny one, it will no longer appear as the final boss in Dynamax Adventures. Always select "Don't take anything" if the final Pokemon is not shiny. The game does track which Legendaries you have seen in adventures but allows you to re-encounter them indefinitely as long as you have not caught them. This is the key difference from normal gameplay -- Dynamax Adventures are designed to support infinite retries for shiny hunting.
