Paldea Overview

Paldea is a region based on the Iberian Peninsula, introduced in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in 2022. It is the first fully open-world main series Pokemon game, allowing players to explore the region in any order. Paldea introduced 120 new Pokemon and three independent story paths: Victory Road (gym challenge), Starfall Street (Team Star battles), and Path of Legends (Titan Pokemon exploration). The Great Crater of Paldea dominates the center of the region, hiding ancient secrets and Paradox Pokemon.

Starter Pokemon

Every Pokemon journey in Paldea begins with choosing one of three starter Pokemon from the region's Pokemon Professor. Each starter has distinct type advantages and evolves twice into a powerful final form.

Key Locations

Paldea features diverse and memorable locations that shape the trainer's journey across the region.

  • Mesagoza — The central capital city of Paldea, home to the Naranja or Uva Academy at its heart.
  • Area Zero — The massive crater at the center of Paldea, home to Paradox Pokemon and Terapagos. The climax of the main story.
  • Cascarrafa — A coastal port town near the Asado Desert with a lighthouse overlooking the sea.
  • Levincia — A port city built on interconnected small islands with a futuristic aesthetic.
  • Kitakami — A landlocked region in The Teal Mask DLC, based on Japanese folklore and rural landscapes.
  • Blueberry Academy — An underwater academy in the Unova region, featured in The Indigo Disk DLC with its Terarium biome system.

Unique Features

Paldea introduced the fully open-world experience with no set route order. Terastal crystallizes Pokemon above their head and changes their Tera Type, adding a type-altering strategic layer. Let's Go mode allows Pokemon to roam outside Poke Balls and auto-battle wild Pokemon. Picnics replace camping with breeding and sandwich-making for encounter power boosts. Paradox Pokemon represent ancient (Scarlet) and future (Violet) versions of existing Pokemon. Tera Raid Battles replace Max Raids with crystal-powered cooperative battles. Academy classes teach battle mechanics through interactive coursework. The DLC adds the Synchro Machine for direct Pokemon control.
