Kalos is a region based on France, introduced in Pokemon X and Y in 2013. It marked the series' transition to full 3D polygonal graphics on the Nintendo 3DS. The region is shaped like a five-pointed star, symbolizing its connection to beauty and elegance. Kalos introduced 72 new Pokemon and the Mega Evolution mechanic that permanently changed battle strategy. The story revolves around Team Flare's attempt to use the ultimate weapon, powered by the legendary Pokemon Xerneas or Yveltal, to reset the world.
Every Pokemon journey in Kalos begins with choosing one of three starter Pokemon from the region's Pokemon Professor. Each starter has distinct type advantages and evolves twice into a powerful final form.
A Grass-type Spiny Nut Pokemon. Chespin's head quill is flexible yet tough. Evolves into Quilladin at level 16 and Chesnaught at level 36.
A Fire-type Fox Pokemon. Fennekin chews twigs to generate heat for its attacks. Evolves into Braixen at level 16 and Delphox at level 36.
A Water-type Bubble Frog Pokemon. Froakie produces protective bubbles from its skin. Evolves into Frogadier at level 16 and Greninja at level 36.
Kalos is home to several legendary and Mythical Pokemon, each with unique lore and significance to the region's history and mythology.

Kalos introduced Mega Evolution, the most significant battle mechanic since Abilities. Mega Evolution temporarily transforms specific Pokemon during battle with boosted stats and sometimes changed typings. Key examples include Charizard gaining both Mega X (Dragon) and Mega Y (Special), and Mewtwo gaining Mega X and Mega Y forms. The Player Search System (PSS) revolutionized online interactions with Wonder Trade. Pokemon Amie allowed bonding with Pokemon, affecting battle performance. Super Training provided visual EV training, and O-Powers granted temporary battle boosts. Sky Battles offered aerial battle formats between Flying-type Pokemon.
