Hoenn Overview

Hoenn is a tropical region introduced in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire in 2002. Unlike Kanto and Johto's land-based layout, Hoenn is an archipelago with extensive water routes connecting its islands. The region's climate varies dramatically from tropical rainforests to volcanic mountains and deep ocean trenches. Hoenn introduced 135 new Pokemon, Abilities, and Natures. The rivalry between Team Aqua and Team Magma drives the main storyline involving the super-ancient legendary Pokemon Kyogre and Groudon.

Starter Pokemon

Every Pokemon journey in Hoenn begins with choosing one of three starter Pokemon from the region's Pokemon Professor. Each starter has distinct type advantages and evolves twice into a powerful final form.

Treecko

A Grass-type Wood Gecko Pokemon. Treecko climbs walls and uses its tail as an extra limb. Evolves into Grovyle at level 16 and Sceptile at level 36.

Fire

A Fire-type Chick Pokemon. Torchic generates heat from its internal flame. Evolves into Combusken at level 16 and Blaziken at level 36.

Key Locations

Hoenn features diverse and memorable locations that shape the trainer's journey across the region.

  • Littleroot Town — Professor Birch's lab and the player's starting home in the Hoenn region.
  • Petalburg City — The hometown of Wally and location of Norman's Normal-type gym.
  • Fortree City — A treehouse city hidden in the forest canopy, accessible only after acquiring the Devon Scuba Gear.
  • Mossdeep City — An island city with a space center and the dual-type Psychic gym.
  • Sootopolis City — A city inside a volcanic crater, site of the Kyogre and Groudon climactic battle.
  • Sky Pillar — A crumbling tower where Rayquaza resides, requiring Mach Bike skill to navigate.

Unique Features

Hoenn introduced Abilities and Natures, which permanently changed competitive Pokemon battling. Double Battles became a core format for VGC tournaments. Pokemon Contests in Lilycove and Slateport offer an alternative to battling, with Pokemon judged on appeal. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire added the Delta Episode involving Deoxys, Primal Reversion for Kyogre and Groudon, and Mega Evolution for Rayquaza. The Battle Frontier in Emerald is considered one of the most challenging post-game facilities in Pokemon history.
