Toxtricity Overview

Toxtricity is an Electric/Poison-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 8 in the Galar region. It evolves from Toxel starting at level 30, with the form (Amped or Low Key) determined by Toxel's nature. Toxtricity is known as the Punk Pokemon, and its design is based on a punk rock musician — the Amped form resembles a lead guitarist with spiked hair and a electric guitar-like chest pattern, while the Low Key form resembles a bassist with a more subdued appearance.

Toxtricity's signature ability Punk Rock boosts the power of sound-based moves by 30% and halves damage from sound-based moves. This gives its Boomburst and Overdrive tremendous power — a Punk Rock-boosted Boomburst has 182 base power (140 * 1.3) before STAB, making it one of the most powerful special attacks in the game. The Electric/Poison typing is unique to Toxtricity and its pre-evolution, giving it only two weaknesses (Ground and Psychic) and seven resistances.

Battle Strategy

Toxtricity's competitive strategy revolves around Punk Rock-boosted sound moves. The Amped form learns Shift Gear, which boosts its Speed and Attack, making it a potent setup sweeper. A Shift Gear set runs Boomburst as a nuke, Overdrive for Electric STAB (also a sound move, so Punk Rock boosted), and coverage moves like Sludge Wave for Poison STAB or Volt Switch for momentum. The Low Key form learns Magnetic Flux instead, which is less useful, making Amped the preferred form.

Toxtricity can also run a special wallbreaker set with a Choice Specs. A Specs-boosted, Punk Rock-boosted Boomburst hits almost as hard as anything in the game. Overdrive becomes a reliable Electric STAB. The third move is often Sludge Wave for Poison coverage or Fire Punch (through breeding) for Steel-types. Toxtricity's base 75 Speed is middling, so it appreciates Sticky Web or Paralysis support to outspeed faster threats.

Toxtricity's main weakness is its Ground-type vulnerability — Earthquake and Earth Power will OHKO it. It also struggles against specially-defensive Pokemon like Blissey, which can wall its special attacks. Soundproof Pokemon like Kommo-o and Mr. Mime are completely immune to Boomburst and Overdrive. Despite these checks, Toxtricity's unique niche as a Punk Rock abuser makes it a dangerous threat in the right match-up.

Competitive Usage

Toxtricity has found a solid niche in competitive Pokemon across multiple tiers. In Smogon, it is ranked in the UU tier where its Choice Specs set functions as a powerful wallbreaker. The main challenge Toxtricity faces is its Speed tier — base 75 leaves it outspeed by many common threats. In VGC, Toxtricity has seen niche usage in Trick Room teams, where its middling Speed becomes an advantage. It pairs well with Indeedee-F, whose Psychic Terrain blocks priority moves that threaten Toxtricity.

Toxtricity's unique typing gives it a crucial niche: it is one of the few Pokemon that resists both Fairy and Steel simultaneously. This makes it a decent check to Pokemon like Sylveon, Gardevoir, and Aegislash. Tera Water or Tera Grass can flip its Ground weakness, making it even harder to remove. Common counters include fast Ground-types like Excadrill, Garchomp, and Landorus-T, which outspeed and OHKO Toxtricity. Soundproof Pokemon completely wall it, so carrying coverage for them is essential.
