Squirtle Overview

Squirtle is a Water-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 1 in the Kanto region. It is one of three starter Pokemon offered at the beginning of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Green, alongside Bulbasaur and Charmander. Squirtle evolves into Wartortle at level 16 and then into Blastoise at level 36. It is the first Water-type starter in the Pokemon series.

Squirtle is a small, bipedal turtle Pokemon with blue skin, a brown shell, and a curled tail. Its shell is made of hard keratin and serves as both protection and a hydrojet propulsion system. Squirtle's design emphasizes its turtle nature, with a round body and flipper-like feet. Its final evolution Blastoise gains massive shoulder-mounted water cannons capable of piercing steel.

Battle Strategy

Squirtle itself is primarily used in Little Cup, where its decent 65 base Defense and access to Aqua Jet, Fake Out, and setup moves like Shell Smash make it a solid choice. With Eviolite, Squirtle becomes quite bulky for the LC format. However, the real competitive value comes from Blastoise.

Blastoise serves as a bulky Water-type with several viable sets. The most notable is its Mega Evolution, which gains Mega Launcher, boosting the power of pulse moves by 50%. This makes Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, and Water Pulse hit extremely hard. A standard Mega Blastoise set runs Water Pulse or Scald, Aura Sphere, Dark Pulse, and Ice Beam or Dragon Tail.

In non-Mega formats, Blastoise excels as a Rapid Spin user with reliable recovery. Its ability Torrent boosts Water moves at low HP, giving it a potential power boost when used strategically. The Shell Smash set turns Blastoise into a sweeper, with +2 Attack, Special Attack, and Speed after one turn, though its mediocre Speed even after the boost limits its effectiveness.

Competitive Usage

Blastoise has had a varied competitive history. Mega Blastoise saw usage in UU during Generations 6 and 7, where its Mega Launcher-boosted attacks provided excellent coverage and power. In Generation 8, Blastoise gained Shell Smash, giving it a new offensive role. In Generation 9, Blastoise is ranked in UU as a bulky spinner and offensive threat. Common checks include specially defensive Water Absorb Pokemon like Vaporeon and Gastrodon, as well as bulky Grass-types like Amoonguss and Tangrowth that resist Water and hit back hard.
