Psyduck Overview

Psyduck is a Water-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 1 in the Kanto region. It evolves into Golduck starting at level 33. Known as the Duck Pokemon, Psyduck is constantly afflicted by severe headaches that cause it to hold its head in pain. These headaches occasionally unleash bursts of psychic energy, despite Psyduck not being a Psychic-type.

Psyduck is a yellow, duck-like Pokemon with a round body, webbed feet, and a distinctive beak. Its eyes are often squinted in pain from its constant headaches. The confusion around Psyduck's typing is a running joke in the Pokemon franchise. Despite using psychic powers in the anime, Psyduck remains pure Water-type in the games. Its hidden ability Swift Swim doubles its Speed in rain, hinting at its true aquatic nature.

Battle Strategy

Psyduck is primarily used in Little Cup, where its decent Special Attack and access to Scald or Hydro Pump make it a serviceable special attacker. Cloud Nine is its standout ability, which negates all weather effects. This can be strategically useful against weather-reliant teams, though Psyduck's low bulk makes it difficult to keep on the field.

Golduck has seen niche usage in PU and NU tiers as a Swift Swim sweeper. In rain, Golduck's Speed doubles, allowing it to outrun the entire unboosted tier. It runs Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Psychic, and Grass Knot or Focus Blast for coverage. Mystical Water or Life Orb boost its damage output. Cloud Nine Golduck can also serve as a weather check on teams that struggle against sun or sand.

Golduck's most interesting niche is as a Cloud Nine user with access to Scald, which can burn physical attackers regardless of weather. It also gets Encore, Disable, and Yawn for disruption. However, Golduck's mediocre 65 base Special Attack and 55 base Speed (even doubled by Swift Swim) leave it outclassed by other rain sweepers like Kingdra and Seismitoad.

Competitive Usage

Psyduck and Golduck are low-tier competitive options. Golduck sits in PU or NU in most generations, where Swift Swim gives it a defined niche on rain teams. Cloud Nine Golduck has seen tournament usage as a weather counter, particularly against sun teams featuring Mega Charizard Y or Torkoal. The main drawback is Golduck's middling stats: 80/82/78 defenses are passable, but 95 Special Attack and 85 Speed leave much to be desired even with rain support. Swift Swim Kingdra and Barraskewda are generally preferred for rain offense due to better stats and typing.
