Primarina is a Water/Fairy-type Pokemon introduced in Generation 7 in the Alola region. It evolves from Brionne starting at level 34, which evolves from Popplio, the Water-type starter of Alola. Primarina is known as the Soloist Pokemon, and its design is based on a sea lion or siren combined with an opera singer and a ballerina. It uses its voice to perform melodic attacks that can soothe or harm, and its signature move is Sparkling Aria.
Primarina's Water/Fairy typing is unique — it was the first Pokemon with this combination (before Marill and Azumarill gained Fairy typing retroactively). This typing gives Primarina excellent defensive utility: it is immune to Dragon, resists Dark, Fighting, Ice, Fire, and Water, and has only three weaknesses (Grass, Electric, Poison). Its Hidden Ability Liquid Voice turns all sound-based Normal moves into Water-type and boosts their power, letting Primarina use Hyper Voice as a powerful Water STAB that bypasses Substitute.
Primarina's competitive strategy centers on its massive base 126 Special Attack and excellent defensive typing. The standard set runs Hyper Voice (converted to Water by Liquid Voice) as a powerful spread STAB move in doubles. Moonblast provides Fairy STAB coverage. Ice Beam covers Grass and Dragon-types. The fourth move is often Flip Turn for momentum, Psychic for Poison-types, or Energy Ball for Water-types. Primarina typically holds a Throat Spray, which activates when it uses Hyper Voice, boosting its Special Attack.
In singles, Primarina functions as a specially-offensive wallbreaker with a Choice Specs. A Specs-boosted Liquid Voice Hyper Voice hits extremely hard and has no drawback. Moonblast hits Dark and Fighting-types. Hydro Pump provides additional Water STAB that bypasses Soundproof. Primarina can also run a Calm Mind set with Leftovers for recovery, boosting its Special Attack and Special Defense to set up for a sweep.
Primarina's main weaknesses are its base 60 Speed and vulnerability to Poison and Electric attacks. With its middling Speed, Primarina often moves second, which can be problematic against faster threats. It also has a Stealth Rock weakness (2x) and takes heavy damage from Toxic Spikes. Tera Fire, Tera Ground, or Tera Steel are common tera types to flip its weaknesses. Despite these drawbacks, Primarina's unique typing and power make it a staple on many teams.
Primarina
Liquid Voice
Primarina has been a consistent presence in competitive Pokemon since its introduction. In Smogon, it is ranked in the UU tier where its Choice Specs set is a feared wallbreaker. Its Water/Fairy typing gives it a unique niche as a specially-offensive pivot that checks Dark-types, Fighting-types, and Dragon-types simultaneously. Main counters include Toxapex, which resists both STABs and can Toxic stall, and specially-defensive Steel-types like Heatran and Celesteela.
In VGC, Primarina has seen increased usage in Generation 9 due to its ability to check the dominant Chi-Yu and Flutter Mane. Liquid Voice Hyper Voice is one of the few spread moves that can hit both opponents while bypassing the Special Defense drops of Intimidate cycling. Primarina pairs well with Trick Room setters like Cresselia and Farigiraf. Tera Steel is a popular tera type that flips all of Primarina's weaknesses into resistances or immunities. Common counters include Rillaboom, whose Grassy Glide priority OHKOs Primarina, and Amoonguss, which resists both STABs and can put Primarina to sleep with Spore.
