Metagross Overview

Metagross is a Steel/Psychic-type Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon introduced in Generation 3 in the Hoenn region. It evolves from Metang starting at level 45, which evolves from Beldum starting at level 20. With a base stat total of 600, Metagross is one of the most powerful non-legendary Pokemon, acting as the Pseudo-Legendary of the Hoenn region alongside Salamence.

Metagross is a massive, four-legged mechanical spider-like Pokemon with a silver body and an X-shaped face. Its design is inspired by supercomputers and mechanical spiders. Metagross is said to be the result of the fusion of two Metang, giving it four brains that work in parallel to solve complex calculations. Its base 135 Attack and 130 Defense make it a formidable physical tank.

Battle Strategy

Metagross functions as a physically offensive tank with excellent defensive typing. Steel/Psychic gives it 10 resistances, including a Psychic immunity and Poison immunity. Its Clear Body ability prevents stat drops from Intimidate and moves like Shadow Ball. The standard set uses Meteor Mash (Steel STAB with Attack boost chance), Zen Headbutt (Psychic STAB with flinch chance), Earthquake, and Ice Punch or Bullet Punch.

Mega Metagross gains 145 base Attack, 150 base Defense, and 110 base Speed, along with Tough Claws ability which boosts contact moves by 30%. This makes its punches and kicks hit significantly harder. Meteor Mash under Tough Claws has effective 130 base power. The increased Speed lets Mega Metagross outspeed key threats like Landorus-T and Garchomp.

In non-Mega formats, Metagross often runs an Assault Vest set to boost its special bulk, making it a specially defensive tank. With 80/130/90 defenses, Assault Vest Metagross takes special hits well while hitting back hard with its physical moves. Choice Band Metagross is another option for immediate wallbreaking power. Agility sets can compensate for its 70 base Speed.

Competitive Usage

Metagross has been a consistent OU threat across generations. Its Steel/Psychic typing gives it a unique defensive profile with key immunities. Mega Metagross was a top-tier OU Pokemon in Generation 6 and 7. In Generation 9, Metagross sits in UU. Common checks include specially defensive Fire-types like Heatran (resists Steel and Psychic), bulky Water-types like Slowbro (resists Steel), and Ground-types like Hippowdon and Landorus-T that can take hits and threaten back with Earthquake.
