Dozens of creative Nuzlocke rule variants to keep the challenge fresh and exciting.

Wonderlocke replaces the standard catching rule with the Wonder Trade (now Surprise Trade) system. Every Pokemon that is caught must immediately be traded away via Wonder Trade, and the received Pokemon becomes the player's encounter for that route. This variant creates extreme randomness and forces the player to adapt to whatever Pokemon arrive. Wonderlocke runs often produce unexpected team compositions, from level 100 hacked Pokemon to newly-hatched babies. The trade evolution clause allows received trade evolution Pokemon to evolve normally. Wonderlocke is most fun in Generations 6 and later when Wonder Trade is available. Streaming and community Wonderlocke events add a social dimension where viewers can send Pokemon to the streamer. The main drawback is the time spent trading and the risk of receiving duplicate Pokemon.
Egglocke replaces all wild encounters with eggs that hatch into random Pokemon. This variant requires preparation: the player or a community member must breed dozens of eggs containing a variety of Pokemon. Typically, eggs are organized so that one egg corresponds to each route. The player carries the eggs in their PC, withdraws one per route, and hatches it to discover their encounter. Egglocke eliminates the risk of catching unwanted Pokemon while maintaining randomness. Community-prepped egglocke files often contain competitive Pokemon, shinies, and rare species. The variant is popular for streaming because egg hatches create exciting reveal moments. The main challenge is the time required to hatch eggs, which can be mitigated by using the hatching O-Power or Flame Body ability Pokemon.
Soul Link is a two-player Nuzlocke variant where each player's Pokemon is paired with the other player's Pokemon from the same route. If one Pokemon in a pair faints, its linked partner is also considered dead. This creates a shared sense of loss and tension, as one player's mistake can cost both players a Pokemon. Soul Link runs are popular for streaming and co-op play, as they create dramatic moments and require coordination between players. The variant is available in Nuzlocke tracking software and ROM hacks that automate the pairing. Soul Link works best when both players have similar skill levels. The variant can be combined with hardcore rules (no items, Set mode, level caps) for an even more intense experience. Nuzlocke duos often use voice chat to coordinate moves and cheer each other on.
Wedlocke, created by streamer KingNappy and modified by GameBoyLuke, organizes Pokemon into male-female pairs. The pairs are formed in the order Pokemon are caught: the first male and first female become Pair 1, the second male and second female become Pair 2, and so on. Only one pair may be used per battle, and if one member of the pair faints, the other must be the next Pokemon sent out. This rule forces the player to use Pokemon that support each other's strengths and cover weaknesses. Wedlocke encourages creative pairings like Gyarados and Rotom-Wash, or Togekiss and Excadrill. The variant makes the player appreciate support moves like Rain Dance, Reflect, and Thunder Wave that might otherwise be ignored. Pinkan, based on the Orange Islands anime, is a related variant where blue Pokemon (mostly male) and pink Pokemon (mostly female) are paired.
Randomizer Nuzlocke uses a ROM randomizer to shuffle Pokemon encounters, types, abilities, movesets, and items. The randomizer can be configured at different levels: Wild Pokemon only, full random including trainers, or extreme random where every Pokemon is a legendary. Randomized ability settings can create absurd combinations like Wonderguard on a Pokemon with no type weaknesses. Type randomization changes the type chart and STAB calculations. Move randomization gives Pokemon unpredictable movesets. Randomizer runs are highly entertaining for streaming because of the constant surprises. The main challenge is the unpredictable difficulty curve: you might face a Route 1 Pidgey or a Route 1 Rayquaza. Randomizer runs require extensive game knowledge to recognize what abilities, types, and movesets are dangerous. The universal randomizer by Drayano and类似的 tools are commonly used by the community.
The Nuzlocke community has created dozens of additional variants. Apocalocke restricts encounters to a specific theme like types found in a post-apocalyptic scenario. Baby Lock limits the player to unevolved Pokemon only. Fight Club has one active Pokemon at a time, with the rest of the team in the Box. Genderlocke restricts the player to Pokemon of a specific gender. Greylocke uses grayscale screen to make Shiny detection impossible. Monotype Nuzlocke restricts the player to one type, creating a puzzle-style challenge for each Gym. Tierlocke bans overused Pokemon and forces niche picks. Alphabetlocke restricts encounters to Pokemon starting with a specific letter for each route. Artlocke requires the player to draw each encounter and death. The variety of Nuzlocke variants means there is always a new way to experience the Pokemon games, and creative players continue to invent new rule sets.
