The Bicycle is the primary method of fast travel in every Pokemon generation. It doubles or triples the player's walking speed and is typically obtained mid-game from a character in a major city. In Kanto, the Bicycle is received from the Cycling Road receptionist in Cerulean City after obtaining the Bike Voucher. In Hoenn, the Mach Bike (for climbing muddy slopes) and Acro Bike (for tricks and rails) offer a choice between utility and fun. In Sinnoh, the Bicycle is obtained in Eterna City and uses gear shifting for different speeds. In Galar, the Rotom Bike can travel on water and land, replacing both the Bicycle and Surf HM. In Paldea, the Miraidon or Koraidon legendary serves as the primary mount, replacing the traditional Bicycle entirely.
Fishing Rods allow the player to encounter water Pokemon by fishing in designated water tiles. The Old Rod catches common Water types like Magikarp, the Good Rod catches medium-rare species, and the Super Rod catches the rarest and strongest Water types. In most games, the rods are given by fishing enthusiasts along routes with water access. Fishing mechanics vary by generation: Generations 1-5 use a timing-based mechanic where the player must press A when the bobber goes under, while Generations 6-9 simplified fishing to a single interaction. Chain Fishing in Generation 6 increases shiny odds for consecutive fishing encounters. Fishing remains one of the most reliable methods to encounter Water-type Pokemon with good IVs and hidden abilities.
Hidden Machines (HMs) were key items that taught Pokemon field moves for overworld traversal. Cut clears small trees, Surf allows water travel, Strength moves boulders, Fly enables fast travel to visited towns, Waterfall climbs waterfalls, Rock Smash breaks rocks, Flash lights dark caves, Whirlpool removes water whirlpools, and Dive enables underwater exploration. HMs required a Pokemon to know the move, which could not be forgotten without the Move Deleter. Generation 7 replaced HMs with the Ride Pager, which calls rideable Pokemon for field moves without taking up a moveslot. Generation 8 removed HMs entirely, using the Rotom Bike and Pokemon abilities for traversal. Generation 9 uses the legendary mount's inherent traversal abilities.
The Mega Ring, introduced in Generation 6, allows the player to Mega Evolve compatible Pokemon during battle. Key Stones are held by the trainer while Mega Stones are held by the Pokemon. Mega Evolution boosts stats, changes abilities, and sometimes changes typing for one battle. Notable Mega Stones include Charizardite X and Y (giving Charizard Dragon and Flying type megas respectively), Mewtwonite X and Y, Kangaskhanite (giving Parental Bond), and Salamencite (giving Aerilate). Each Mega Stone is typically found at a specific location in the game world. Generation 7 retained Mega Evolution but limited it to the post-game. Generation 8 removed Mega Evolution entirely, replaced by Dynamax and Gigantamax.
The Z-Ring, introduced in Generation 7, allows the trainer and Pokemon to use Z-Moves once per battle. Z-Moves are incredibly powerful one-time attacks that require the corresponding Z-Crystal. Each type has a Z-Crystal that powers up a move of that type, and specific Pokemon have signature Z-Crystals. Pikashunium Z gives Pikachu's Catastropika, Snorlium Z gives Snorlax's Pulverizing Pancake, and Eevium Z gives Eevee's Extreme Evoboost. Z-Moves bypass accuracy checks and cannot be redirected by abilities like Lightning Rod. They can be used to break through defensive Pokemon or secure a crucial knockout. Z-Crystals are found throughout the Alola region and are obtained from Island Guardians, Kahunas, and special events.
Exploration key items unlock areas or provide essential utilities across generations. Itemfinder and Dowsing Machine locate hidden items on the ground. Poke Flute awakens sleeping Pokemon blocking routes. Silph Scope reveals Ghost-type Pokemon in Lavender Tower. Devon Scope reveals hidden Kecleon in Hoenn. Clear Bell or Tidal Bell calls Ho-Oh or Lugia in Johto. Power Plant key items like the Machine Part or Generator parts restore infrastructure. The Town Map and Pokenav provide navigation and Pokemon tracking. Vs. Seeker allows trainer rematches for experience and money. Poketch, Pokegear, C-Gear, PSS, Festival Plaza, Rotom Phone, and Pokedex are multi-function devices that combine map, communication, and game information into one key item slot.
Post-game key items unlock legendary encounters and endgame content. The Eon Flute in ORAS allows soaring on Latias or Latios. The Azure Flute in Sinnoh was events-only for Arceus. The Gracidea flower transforms Shaymin between Land and Sky formes. The Reveal Glass transforms Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus between Incarnate and Therian formes. DNA Splicers fuse Kyurem with Reshiram or Zekrom into White or Black Kyurem. The N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer fuse Necrozma with Solgaleo or Lunala into Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings forms. The Prison Bottle transforms Hoopa between Confined and Unbound formes. The Adamant, Lustrous, and Griseous Orbs boost Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina's respective type moves while held. These items are typically obtained post-game from special locations or event distributions.
