The Fire Stone evolves Growlithe into Arcanine, Eevee into Flareon, and Pansear into Simisear. In Generation 1, the Fire Stone is found in the Pokemon Mansion on Cinnabar Island. In Kanto remakes, it appears in similar locations. In Generations 5-9, Fire Stones can be found in dust clouds, mining spots, and as Pokepelago rewards. Arcanine gains Intimidate and extreme Speed access upon evolution, making the Fire Stone a valuable early-game purchase or find. In Scarlet and Violet, Fire Stones are available from the Delibird Presents shop in Cascarrafa after obtaining three Gym Badges.
The Water Stone evolves Poliwhirl into Poliwrath, Shellder into Cloyster, Staryu into Starmie, Eevee into Vaporeon, Lombre into Ludicolo, and Panpour into Simipour. Starmie with its high Speed and coverage makes Water Stone one of the most impactful evolution items in competitive history. In most games, Water Stones are found on beaches or purchased from specialty shops. In Scarlet and Violet, Water Stones can be purchased at Delibird Presents in Levincia. The large number of Pokemon requiring Water Stones means multiple stones are often needed for a complete Pokedex.
The Thunder Stone evolves Pikachu into Raichu, Eevee into Jolteon, Eelektrik into Eelektross, Charjabug into Vikavolt, and Magneton into Magnezone. Thunder Stone has the distinction of being usable in the field in several games, allowing early evolution of Magneton without needing to level up in a special magnetic field area. Jolteon's base 130 Speed makes Thunder Stone a strong choice for early-game Speed control. In Galar, Thunder Stone is also used to evolve Charjabug, which normally requires leveling up in the Wild Area's electrical storm. In Alola, Pikachu evolves into Alolan Raichu when exposed to Thunder Stone in the Alola region.
The Leaf Stone evolves Gloom into Vileplume, Weepinbell into Victreebel, Exeggcute into Exeggutor (or Alolan Exeggutor in Alola), Eevee into Leafeon, Nuzleaf into Shiftry, and Pansage into Simisage. Leaf Stone is obtained in forested areas of most regions. In Kanto, it is found on Route 2 near Viridian Forest. Vileplume and Victreebel were both prominent in early competitive play with access to Sleep Powder and high Special stats. In Paldea, Leaf Stones can be purchased from Delibird Presents in Mesagoza. Exeggcute requiring a Leaf Stone to evolve means players must decide between the Kanto and Alolan forms at evolution time.
Moon Stone evolves Nidorina into Nidoqueen, Nidorino into Nidoking, Clefairy into Clefable, Jigglypuff into Wigglytuff, Skitty into Delcatty, and Munna into Musharna. Moon Stone is one of the most versatile evolution stones, usable by six different evolution families. Nidoking and Nidoqueen gain significant stat boosts and expanded movepools upon evolution. In most games, Moon Stones are found in caves and Mount Moon in Kanto is the iconic location. Moon Stones are common in the Underground of Sinnoh and can be dug up with the Explorer Kit. In Paldea, Moon Stones are found in the Socarrat Trail and Alfornada Cavern areas.
The Sun Stone evolves Gloom into Bellossom, Sunkern into Sunflora, Cottonee into Whimsicott, Petilil into Lilligant, and Helioptile into Heliolisk. Sunflora requires a Sun Stone immediately after catching, making it the fastest evolution in the series. Dawn Stone evolves male Kirlia into Gallade and female Snorunt into Froslass. Dusk Stone evolves Murkrow into Honchkrow, Misdreavus into Mismagius, Lampent into Chandelure, and Doublade into Aegislash. Shiny Stone evolves Togetic into Togekiss, Roselia into Roserade, Minccino into Cinccino, and Floette into Florges. Chandelure and Aegislash are top-tier competitive Pokemon that both require Dusk Stone evolution.
The Ice Stone, introduced in Generation 7, evolves Eevee into Glaceon, Alolan Sandshrew into Alolan Sandslash, Alolan Vulpix into Alolan Ninetales, Hisuian Growlithe into Hisuian Arcanine, and Cetoddle into Cetitan. Ice Stone replaces the need for the Ice Rock location that previously evolved Eevee into Glaceon in Generations 4-6. In Alola, Ice Stones are found on Mount Lanakila. In Paldea, they drop from Glimmora and can be found in the Glaseado Mountain area. The addition of Ice Stone made Glaceon and Alolan Ninetales much easier to obtain in competitive play, with Alolan Ninetales being a premier Aurora Veil setter in VGC.
