Life Orb boosts the power of all attacks by 30% at the cost of 10% HP per attack. This item is a staple for offensive Pokemon that need extra firepower without being locked into a single move. It pairs well with Pokemon that have high Speed and decent coverage, such as Garchomp, Lucario, and Greninja. The recoil damage can be offset by Leftovers, Poison Heal, or Drain Punch recovery. Life Orb works with both physical and special moves, making it versatile for mixed attackers. Unlike Choice items, Life Orb allows free move switching, giving the holder flexibility in battle.
The three Choice items -- Choice Band, Choice Specs, and Choice Scarf -- boost one stat by 50% but lock the holder into the first move used. Choice Band boosts Attack by 50% for physical attackers like Tyranitar and Dracovish. Choice Specs boosts Special Attack by 50% for special sweepers like Dragapult and Tapu Lele. Choice Scarf boosts Speed by 50%, allowing slower Pokemon like Ditto and Heatran to outspeed faster threats. Each Choice item requires careful prediction and team support to pivot safely. U-turn and Volt Switch users often run Choice items to maintain momentum.
Focus Sash prevents the holder from being knocked out in one hit, leaving it at 1 HP if it was at full health. This item is essential for setup sweepers like Dragon Dance Gyarados or Shell Smash Cloyster that need one turn to boost. Lead Pokemon with Stealth Rock, Sticky Web, or Taunt also benefit from Focus Sash, guaranteeing at least one turn of setup or hazard placement. Focus Sash is consumed on use and does not protect against multi-hit moves, entry hazards, or weather damage. It is most effective on frail Pokemon with high offensive potential.
Leftovers restores 1/16 of the holder's maximum HP at the end of each turn. This passive recovery makes Leftovers the premier defensive item for walls and tanks like Blissey, Toxapex, and Ferrothorn. Leftovers adds up over the course of a long battle, often meaning the difference between surviving one more hit or fainting. Substitute users like Gliscor and Celesteela appreciate Leftovers to offset the HP cost of Substitute. Leftovers is also common on defensive Pokemon that run Protect to gain two turns of recovery per cycle.
Assault Vest boosts the holder's Special Defense by 50%, but prevents the use of non-damaging moves. This item transforms specially bulky Pokemon like Conkeldurr, Magearna, and Slowbro-Galar into special walls that can still hit hard. The drawback of being unable to use status moves means Assault Vest users rely purely on attacking moves for utility. Knock Off, U-turn, and Rapid Spin are common attacking moves with utility effects that work around Assault Vest's restriction. Assault Vest is most effective on Pokemon with already decent Special Defense and good offensive typing.
Heavy-Duty Boots negate all damage from entry hazards including Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sticky Web. This item is critical for Pokemon weak to Stealth Rock, such as Charizard, Volcarona, and Moltres. Pokemon that frequently switch in and out, like Defog users and pivots, also benefit from Heavy-Duty Boots. The item has no drawback for hazard-weak Pokemon, making it the default choice over Leftovers for many Flying, Fire, Bug, and Ice types. In formats where hazards are common, Heavy-Duty Boots can be more valuable than any offensive boost.
Weakness Policy boosts the holder's Attack and Special Attack by two stages each when hit by a super effective move. It is common on Dynamax users and bulky setup sweepers like Dragonite and Togekiss. Focus Punch sets often run a pinch berry like Salac or Liechi Berry to boost Speed or Attack when low on HP. Rocky Helmet chips the attacker for 1/6 of their max HP on contact, punishing physical attackers and U-turn users. Air Balloon grants Ground immunity until the holder takes damage, giving Ground-weak Pokemon like Heatran and Magnezone a free switch-in. Eject Button and Red Card serve as disruptive items that force switches or reposition the holder when hit.
