Some Pokemon require specific locations to evolve. Magnetic field areas cause evolution for certain Electric and Steel types. Magneton evolves into Magnezone when leveled up in a magnetic field area, typically found in routes with special magnetic properties. Nosepass evolves into Proboscis Pass similarly. In Hisui, regional variants add new location-based evolutions.
Leafeon and Glaceon evolve near Mossy Rock and Ice Rock respectively in certain games. In Generation 8 onward, Leaf Stone and Ice Stone replace these location requirements. Crabrawler evolves into Crabominable only at Mount Lanakila in Alola, a specific late-game area. Regional variants like Hisuian Qwilfish evolve into Overqwil after using Barb Barrage in the Strong Style, a mechanic unique to Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
Several Pokemon evolve when they level up while knowing a specific move. The move does not need to be used in battle, just known. Mamoswine evolves from Piloswine when it levels up knowing Ancient Power. Tangrowth evolves from Tangela the same way. Aipom requires Double Hit, Lickitung requires Rollout, and Stantler requires Psyshield Bash (in Legends: Arceus).
More recent generations have added additional move-based evolutions. Primeape evolves into Annihilape after using the move Rage Fist 20 times and then leveling up. Bisharp evolves into Kingambit after defeating three other Bisharp leading Pawniard groups and then leveling up. These conditions require significant in-game effort but reward players with powerful final forms.
Many Pokemon evolve when traded while holding a specific item. The held item is consumed upon evolution. The Metal Coat and King's Rock are two of the most well-known evolution items. Some Pokemon have uniquely specific evolution requirements. Inkay evolves into Malamar when leveled up while the console (or the player character in Let's Go) is held upside down. Pancham evolves into Pangoro when leveled up with a Dark-type Pokemon in the party. Mantyke evolves into Mantine when leveled up with a Remoraid in the party.
Galarian Farfetch'd evolves into Sirfetch'd after landing three critical hits in a single battle. Galarian Yamask evolves into Runerigus after taking 49 or more HP of damage without fainting and walking under a specific stone arch. These conditions require specific strategies to achieve and are among the most challenging evolution methods in the game.
