The Eight Eeveelutions

Eevee is unique in the Pokemon world for having eight different evolution possibilities, more than any other Pokemon. Each Eeveelution corresponds to a different type and has distinct competitive roles and characteristics. Eevee's unstable genetic code allows it to adapt to its environment, and different stimuli trigger different evolutionary paths.

The original three Eeveelutions from Generation 1 are Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon, evolved using the Water Stone, Thunder Stone, and Fire Stone respectively. Generation 2 added Espeon and Umbreon, which require high friendship and leveling up at specific times of day. Generation 4 introduced Leafeon and Glaceon via location-based evolution near Mossy Rock and Ice Rock. Generation 6 added Sylveon, which requires high friendship and knowing a Fairy-type move.

Vaporeon (Water)

Vaporeon evolves from Eevee when exposed to a Water Stone. It has base stats of 130 HP, 65 Attack, 60 Defense, 110 Special Attack, 95 Special Defense, and 65 Speed. Its high HP and Special Attack make it an excellent bulky water-type special attacker. Vaporeon learns moves like Scald, Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, and Wish, allowing it to both attack and support its team.

Vaporeon's ability Water Absorb grants immunity to Water moves and heals 25% of max HP when hit by one. This makes Vaporeon a great switch-in against common Water moves. In competitive play, Vaporeon functions best as a specially defensive pivot with Wish support. Its high HP also makes it one of the best users of substitutes, as its substitutes can survive multiple hits.

Jolteon (Electric)

Jolteon evolves with a Thunder Stone. Its base stats favor Speed (130) and Special Attack (110), making it one of the fastest Electric types in the game. Its other stats are lower: 65 HP, 65 Attack, 60 Defense, and 95 Special Defense. Jolteon's niche is as a fast special attacker with Volt Absorb or Quick Feet as its abilities.

Volt Absorb gives Jolteon an immunity to Electric moves, healing it instead of taking damage. This pairs well with Electric Terrain and pivot moves. Jolteon learns Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, Volt Switch, and Hidden Power (in older generations). In Generation 9, Jolteon struggles somewhat due to power creep and competition from faster Electric types like Regieleki and Iron Hands.

Flareon (Fire)

Flareon evolves with a Fire Stone. It has the highest Attack of all Eeveelutions (130 base), but its movepool is limited for a physical attacker. Its stats are 65 HP, 130 Attack, 60 Defense, 95 Special Attack, 110 Special Defense, and 65 Speed. Flareon's best competitive sets use its decent Special Defense and strong physical attacks.

Flareon's primary limitation is its limited physical Fire moves. It relied on Flare Blitz for years, which causes recoil damage. Guts is its most useful ability, allowing it to absorb status conditions and increase its Attack by 50%. Toxic Orb Flame Orb sets with Facade and Flare Blitz can be threatening, but Flareon's low Speed and bulk hold it back in higher tiers.

Espeon (Psychic)

Espeon evolves from Eevee with high friendship during the daytime. Its base stats are 65 HP, 65 Attack, 60 Defense, 130 Special Attack, 95 Special Defense, and 110 Speed. Espeon is a fast special attacker with Magic Bounce as its hidden ability, which reflects status moves, entry hazards, and Taunt back at the opponent.

Magic Bounce makes Espeon an excellent lead Pokemon, as it reflects Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Sticky Web. Espeon learns Psychic, Shadow Ball, Dazzling Gleam, and coverage moves. Its high Speed allows it to use Calm Mind effectively. In lower competitive tiers, Espeon serves as a reliable special attacker and hazard deterrent.

Umbreon (Dark)

Umbreon evolves from Eevee with high friendship at night. It has the most defensive stat spread: 95 HP, 65 Attack, 110 Defense, 60 Special Attack, 130 Special Defense, and 65 Speed. Umbreon is one of the bulkiest Pokemon in the game, especially on the special side. Its ability Synchronize passes status conditions back to the opponent.

Umbreon is a premier defensive Pokemon in competitive play. It learns Wish for team support, Protect for scouting, Foul Play to use the opponent's Attack stat against them, and Toxic for passive damage. Its incredible special bulk allows it to take hits from powerful special attackers like Sylveon and Togekiss. Umbreon lacks reliable recovery outside of Wish and Moonlight, which limits its longevity in longer battles.

Leafeon (Grass)

Leafeon evolves from Eevee when exposed to a Leaf Stone or leveled up near a Mossy Rock (depending on the generation). Its base stats are 65 HP, 110 Attack, 130 Defense, 60 Special Attack, 65 Special Defense, and 95 Speed. Leafeon has excellent physical Defense and decent Attack, making it a physical wall with offensive presence.

Leafeon's high Defense allows it to check physical attackers like Garchomp and Landorus-T. It learns Swords Dance to boost its Attack, and its STAB Leaf Blade has a high critical-hit ratio. Coverage moves like Knock Off and X-Scissor help against Grass-resistant opponents. Chlorophyll is its best ability, doubling Speed in sun, though this requires sun support from another Pokemon.

Glaceon (Ice)

Glaceon evolves with an Ice Stone or near an Ice Rock. Its base stats are 65 HP, 60 Attack, 110 Defense, 130 Special Attack, 95 Special Defense, and 65 Speed. Glaceon has tremendous Special Attack but suffers from poor Speed and a bad defensive typing. Ice is weak to Fighting, Rock, Steel, and Fire, making Glaceon difficult to use defensively.

Glaceon's best role is as a wallbreaker on hail or snow teams. Under Snow, its Defense is boosted by 50% thanks to its ability Snow Cloak or Ice Body. Ice Body provides passive healing in hail. Glaceon learns Blizzard, Freeze-Dry, Shadow Ball, and Water Pulse. Freeze-Dry and Water Pulse provide nearly perfect coverage together, making Glaceon a tough wallbreaker in lower tiers.

Sylveon (Fairy)

Sylveon evolves from Eevee when it knows a Fairy-type move and has high friendship. Its base stats are 95 HP, 65 Attack, 65 Defense, 110 Special Attack, 130 Special Defense, and 60 Speed. Sylveon combines high HP with exceptional Special Defense, making it a premier specially defensive Fairy type.

Sylveon's ability Pixilate turns Normal-type moves into Fairy-type moves and boosts their power by 20%. This makes Hyper Voice a devastating Fairy-type STAB move that bypasses Substitute. Sylveon also learns Wish, Protect, Heal Bell, and Mystical Fire for coverage. In competitive play, Sylveon is a top-tier specially defensive cleric and wallbreaker in many tiers. Its Dragon immunity and Fighting resistance make it a valuable team member in any generation.
